Official Love for the Milwaukee Brewers Thread

Recommended Posts

A lot of closet Brewer fans here for various reasons, and many of us have been using the catch all MLB thread to voice our thoughts. With the Brewers leading the Cubs 7-2 in the third, I think it is time for SoxTalk members to officially endorse the Brewers as their team of choice to win the NL Central and keep the Cubs out of the playoffs. And if we get this thread rolling, maybe we can get the Mods to pin it like they did with the Tiger and Twin threads last year.

Go Brewers!

The only thing I don't like about the Brewers is that I have a whole lot of 'em around me going to Marquette, and -- like with most any other fan base -- there's a lot of annoying Brewer fans. This is compounded because these same people are Packer fans. That being said, there's also a big portion of annoying Cubs fans up there, too, so I'll gladly take the ribbing from Milwaukee fans in exchange for them beating the Cubs' ass.

I guess it just pisses me off because -- and I'll try to say this without sounding too arrogant, even though it's going to come off that way -- I know more about the Brewers than a lot of Brewer fans themselves. For example, if you brought up the names Yovani Gallardo and Ryan Braun early in the season, I don't know how many Brewer fans would know those two names.

But like I said, I'm rooting hard for them. Let's hope Yost and Melvin make the right decision and keep Gallardo in the rotation. As of right now, it looks like they're thinking of putting him in the bullpen when he's their third (arguable) best starter. I'd like to see them go with Sheets - Suppan - Capuano - Gallardo - Bush with Vargas in the bullpen, but unfortunately, it looks like Yovani might be the one getting the 'demotion'.

This isn't really all that suprising. The Brewers have sucked for so long, and Wisconsin has never really been big on baseball. Between the Packers and UW, football is the state religion. Our "great" commissioner really destroyed any fanbase there was under his ownership, and the building of Miller Park was very much opposed and left a bitter taste in the mouth of many. The State Senator who cast the deciding vote for the Miller Park, George Petak, was recalled and lost the recall election. (The first elected official that has ever happened to in the history of the state. People were pissed!)

I was born and raised in South Eastern Wisconsin, btw. Go Brewers!

The Brewers and White Sox are closer than realized.

Wikipedia:

In 1968, Bud Selig, a former minority owner of the Milwaukee Braves who had been unable to stop the relocation of his team three years earlier, contracted with the Allyn brothers to host nine home games at Milwaukee County Stadium as part of an attempt to attract an expansion franchise to Milwaukee.

The experiment was staggeringly successful - those nine games drew 264,297 fans. In Chicago that season, the Sox drew 539,478 fans to their remaining 58 home games. In just a handful of games, the Milwaukee crowds accounted for nearly one-third of the total attendance at White Sox games.

In 1968, the Sox schedule in Milwaukee was expanded to include 11 home games (one against every other franchise in the American League at the time). Although those games were attended by slightly fewer fans (198,211 fans, for an average of 18,019) they represented a greater percentage of the total White Sox attendance than the previous year - over one-third of the fans who went to Sox games did so at County Stadium (in the remaining 59 home dates in Chicago, the Sox drew 391,335 for an average of 6,632 per game).

Selig was denied an expansion franchise at the 1968 owners meetings, and turned his efforts toward purchasing and relocating an existing club. His search began close to home, with the White Sox themselves. According to Selig, he had a handshake agreement with Arthur Allyn in early 1969 to purchase a majority stake in the Pale Hose and move them north to the Cream City. The American League, however, blocked the sale, unwilling to give up its presence in a major city. Allyn instead sold his shares to his brother John, who agreed to stay in Chicago. Selig would go on to buy the Seattle Pilots and move them to Milwaukee instead.

All that work and the Cubs only picked up one game this weekend. Hopefully the Pirates allow for the Brewers to get some easy wins.

The Cubs and Brewers flip-flop series against the Pirates and Nationals this week, so in theory there shouldn't be much of a change in the standings.

Even if they have identical weeks, that's one more week's worth of games off the books with Milwaukee 6 and 1/2 games ahead.

The Cubs and Brewers only play each other 3 more times this season, so head-to-head games won't make up that difference.

A big difference will be the Brewers have to face Snell and Gorz, while the Cubs will get Maholm, Van B, and the guy who started today. I'll be happy if the Brewers lead is 5 or above at the break. Let's just hope the Nats don't get no-hit tonight.

I guess it is better to slump in July than September if you can't stay hot the whole year. That said I hope it is a short slump. I hope those pesky Pirates give the Cubs just as much trouble.

Mad that Gorzelanny isn't pitching against the Cubs. The Cubs have trouble hitting soft tossing lefties as much as us.

Well, The Brewers picked up a game today as they won and the Cubs lost. Perhaps the Pirates are actually better than we give them credit for. It would be nice if the Pirates finished in second right behind the Brewers. I was thinking that the Cards need to get going and finish second to keep the Cubs in third, but this Pirates team is kinda spunky. COuld the Pirates have a winning season this year for the first time since the Bonds, Bonilla, Van Slyke days? If it keeps the Cubs out of the playoffs, the Pirates have my complete support.

Brew Crew won last night vs the Nasty Nats and the Chubbies lost 8-4 to the Pirates. My friend, like I did for the Sox, drove to Pittsburgh to watch the Cubs play them. I bet he's happy the trip started off with a bang.

Let's hope the Brewers can get another W tonight, because I doubt the Pirates can beat Big Z

We need a Brewers smiley on here. Like this- :gosox3: , but make it Brewers :P

And Bill Hall leaves today's game with a leg injury. The Brewers are fading heading into the ASB.

I hope he's back soon, Bill Hall is probably my favorite non White Sox, I don't know why, he just is.
