Stall Tactics

Who here thinks these contract talks were just stall tactics by KW to give his team more time to get back into it after he, in haste, stated it was time to start trading?

I know on this board and around town that the pressure has been off to deal since the Buehrle rumors started, and I think if he were actually serious about signing Mark, after getting approval for a 4th year, a NTC would have been a non-issue.

Regardless, it's time for the Sox to start focusing on selling this team, as I thought the first deal would have been done two weeks ago (Richar deal aside.)

I dont really mind losing Buerhle. Hes been great for this company. But, were just fans and can't do nothing about it. I remember the whole offseason with Konerko thing. No reason work yourself over it. I hope things could work out but if they dont time get something in return for him. I look for Danks get better and hopefully have amazing career

why?

you've got until July 31st. You think the value of our players is going to go down the closer we get to that date, or up? what the hell's the big f'n rush.

There's no rush, unless you can assure me Buehrle doesn't regress these next several weeks (as he did last season) or more teams will enter the bidding.

All I know of Buehrle is how he's pitched thus far, and that a contract extension appears dead. Nothing else from this point forward is guaranteed. I believe we're taking a risk assuming his value will remain where it is now in several weeks.

Aside from an injury, there's nothing that's going to lessen his value. He could come out on Monday and get shelled and he's still going to be just as valuable as he is today. People know what they're getting from MB.

Just think of all the insanity that comes into play in the final week or two before the trade deadline - you can't tell me that GM's don't feel the pressure. Sweat 'em out. It's for this reason that KW likes to deal early before the hysteria where you stand a greater chance of overpaying for the services of a guy like Jermaine Dye.

yeah, good f'n point. sure, had we shopped Jermaine Dye right away, instead of f'n waiting, we wouldnt be f'n screwed and f'n stuck with an f'n injured outfielder we don't f'n need... and now his f'n value dropped.

so perhaps, that's the f'n rush... bc you never know when someone's going to get hurt, and the sooner you can find a suitable deal, the better.

I agree that if Kenny could've gotten Mark at 4/56, the NTC most likely wouldn't have been an issue. Mark's worth AT LEAST 5/75 on the open market, which leaves me to believe that the reported 4/56 deal and NTC issue are both complete horses***. Mark has no incentive to extend his contract with a declining team and take $70 million less than Zito in the process. Similarly, KW and JR have no incentive to let a steal like that pass them by, even if it means setting a bad precedent or two.

My feeling is that the bogus 4/56 number was leaked intentionally and that the Sox have no plans to extend Mark. I hope I'm wrong about that. I also believe that this false piece of information has been mixed in with comments from KW about their standard procedure of no idefinite NTCs and that all of this has been reported out of context. From what Mark and his agent have been saying, there haven't even been any negotiations recently.

I think Mark is willing to give the Sox a sweetheart deal at 4/ $ 56.

I think the reason Kenny won't give the NTC is because he doesn't want to pay Mark $ 56 mil. for 4 seasons and therefore wants to be able to trade him.

That's why they are willing to blow the deal over the NTC.

Mark's Sox career is over and he will be traded.

Hey, we'll always have 2005 even if it sucks being a Sox fan for the next 10 years or so. And, while the flubs win the division this year and have some playoffs seasons playing in the Commedy Central while the Sox figure out what a real rebuilding process should be.

One thing that could lessen Buehrle's trade value is named Roy Oswalt. If Houston decides to reload, and there was speculation on ESPN this morning that they might, Oswalt would be a more sought after pitcher, I would think. So if you want to maximize the return, don't diddle around.

If Oswalt is dealt I bet it is to Atlanta.

How about the Sox get in and try and get Oswalt in a three way deal including Buerhle......

Geez I never thought about that; that the NTC clause could be a ruse for KW to be able to unload Buehrle without ever having to pay the full four years/$56MM. In other words, the whole "deal" was really a ruse.

Between that possibility and the possibility that KW was simply trying to play off of Buehrle's hometown sympathy and discount (after being led by, yes, KW and JR that Buehrle really wanted to be in St. Louis) to lock him in and THEN trade him...

I really have had f***ing enough of KW at this point. Especially when they wasted no time signing Vazquez and JC could easily be traded.

June 5 Chicago Tribune - re Jermaine Dye

Dye is making $7 million this year, hits free agency after the '07 season and has his eye on a contract approaching Carlos Lee's yearly salary ($17M). GM Ken Williams has had talks with Dye's agent, Bob Bry, about an extension, but isn't sure he wants to commit that much money to one player.

"There's no doubt we have strong interest in bringing him back, but those are numbers where we have to take a step back and wrestle with them," Williams told the newspaper. "Once you do these deals, if you are wrong, they can cripple the club with ramifications for a lot of years. ... We just have to consider all the variables."

JD could hit .390 and 20 HR from here on out and there's no way that he's getting an extension. That was obvious to me halfway through last year. He's here mostly because KW got him cheap.

As someone else stated more talent could become available from other teams, also some teams currently in contention could drop out of the race limiting the number of suitors...also as the clock gets closer and reality sets in that the Sox are not going to resign buehrle teams may feel they have the upper hand on KW. The best time to trade Buehrle was probably this weekend when everyone thought a signing was close, KW probably hoped someone would have upped their offer to entice him to sell at that time.

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cubs make a run at Mark...he could replace Marshall in the rotation, he wants to stay in Chicago, and it would be a slap in the face to Sox fans. I don't know who the sox would ask in return or if they would just flat out refuse but if they offered Pie and a high level pitching prospect I think KW would be very interested.
