I wonder if Marquette offered Dom to get a package type deal. Just a theory, but the mother did say she was proud of her "sons" in her tweet. Shrugs

I don't know much about Dom's recruiting. Think he's a mid major personally. Could understand package deal though.

Sigh, that was Groce's best shot at a 5 star immediate impact guy. Dude was tight with Groce, his family loved Groce, his AAU (or some tournament team) was coached by Nunn's dad and one of his best friends is an Illinois verbal commit (Williams). You can't dream up a scenario better than that. And Illinois still whiffs.

Illinois just does not get these types of players. It's been 14 years since Dee Brown committed.

It's hard to call something a whiff if they go to Kentucky, of all places. It's Kentucky, probably #1 on most recruits' list. I don't really care if they are from Chicago - it's going to be really hard to beat out Kentucky/Kansas/Duke etc. for the very top 5 stars, especially before you go deep in the tournament with the program. You're right, we had a lot of positive things going (although we're last in the BT...), but some programs hold the trump card.

We still need a PG, that's a bigger need. And a big guy. I'd be thrilled to have CM, but just from a position standpoint, at least we're in better shape there.

We can win with 4 stars and 3 stars. Build the program. Get another couple solid guys, if not 5 stars.

Rock, saw some rumors that Mitchell is backing off of his commitment to OSU since he and his brother may want to stay closer to home. I assume if this happens then Matta goes all out for Bragg.

His brother is transferring most likely as their father is sick, so Mickey is probably gone as well. Matta is already all over Kennard, Bragg and VJ King as their 3 top players the next couple of years. Not sure he gets any of them.

Yeah, disappointing to not get Charles Matthews (assuming all the smoke around Kentucky is correct) because there really was a lot in the Illini's favor here. Fortunately, Matthews was kind of a luxury recruit for the Illini. Between Nunn, Hill, Cosby, Jordan and DJ Williams, the Illini are pretty solid on the wing for the foreseeable future. Matthews would have been a statement recruit in Chicago, no doubt... and this post should not be construed as "no big loss for the Illini" because he would have been a huge, huge pickup.

Groce is off to a really good start with the '15 class and if he lands an impact PG, it's a homerun class with or without Matthews.

Sounds like DJ Williams has been playing PG. So Illinois won't need Brunson. ;)

Matthews tweeted something about shocking people tomorrow.

Most likely trying to build hype, Im just trying to stay cool on this one.

Pick up Illinois hat, put down Illinois hat, pick up bag of money Kentucky hat.

Shocking.

Illinois offer 6'9 Soph from St Joseph, Nick Rakocevic. Big time potential.

I only saw him once and he didn't have a very good game but has impressed a lot of recruiters. Could be top player in IL by the time he's a senior. That may not be saying much cuz the 2016 in IL is down as of now.

That's partly an unrealistic expectation, I know. But at some point he needs to get a guy, not just be in the top 3 or 5. The program needs a program changer or this will be a 5 year rebuild.

Leron Black was a pretty big get.

There's also no way this is a 5 year rebuild unless Groce strikes out on every PG in the next few years and Tate is the only PG on the roster. The team next year will be a tournament team. If not, a rebuild will likely be happening under someone other than Groce.

He's recruiting like Bruce Weber at the end with similar issues with balance. I believe we should expect better than that.

How does missing out on a wing, on a team loaded with wings, prompt a response like this?

In his first year he recruited every position. He was a last second change of heart from recruiting his impact PG in 2014 as well as 2 bigs that fit different roles. He's already recruited one of the better shooters in the state for 2015 and has gotten a top 50 player from Simeon. Complaining that the guy has missed out on Cliff Alexander and Charles Matthews to KU and UK is a bit nuts. Especially considering the dumpster fire he inherited.
