Chisoxfn
It has come to our attention (and has been so for a long long time) that part of the problem with our database stems from an upgrade we made around 2 years ago. The upgrade caused a lot of errors in the database (and our db is huge) and these errors lead to slower queries and the db sticking from time to time (in my non technical terminology since I don't know the technical terminology, lol). I think the only way to ever really solve this problem (aside from going to a database specialist and paying a couple thousand bucks, which unfortunately is not an option, unless of course I win the lottery) is to start the site over. By starting over I mean installing a brand new version of the message board (no posts, no anything). The only potential thing we would be able to restore would be user names. This means nifty things like post counts and all that would be gone. However, we would plan on saving our old database and creating an archive (so that people could still look back and see all the old posts). I figure the long term benefits (faster site, able to search, doesn't crash when big news happens, etc) would be well worth the short term losses and hassle. I just wanted to throw this out to public opinion though to see if you all would be overly dissapointed or if you would be okay with this (basically if so we'd test it and make sure that the db was in fact the cause of the problem and if it wasn't, we would than bring back the old database and continue to see what the cause of the server issue is). This site should be able to handle a lot more than it does and we want to get it set up so it can so that we can continue to make and turn this into a better place. Buehrle>Wood
I'd be fine with it. "faster site, able to search, doesn't crash when big news happens, etc" would be well worth losing my post count.
knightni
Can't you just manually edit post counts?
SoxFan562004
you guys do this for free, so whatever is easiest for you guys.
WHarris1
NOOOOOOOOOOO. I AM NOTHING WITHOUT MY POST COUNT. No I wouldn't care, do what you gotta do.
dasox24
WHAT!?!? I AM SOXTALK'S 114th GREATEST POSTER AND I DON'T WANT MY POST COUNT DELETED!!! QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 08:46 PM) you guys do this for free, so whatever is easiest for you guys. In all seriousness, this is how I feel as well. Whatever you want to do, I'm for it. But, I do like the sound of it being faster, having a search, and seemingly better overall.
Soxbadger
As long as Im still member No.14 I dont care. I really dont care at all, but still its nice to be famous.
southsideirish71
I say start over, clean slate and get this puppy humming. Trying to keep tainted data, and possible corruption in the database will be something you guys will need a ton of hardware to throw at to fix. The archive will give everyone the historical reference point for older posts. wipe it clean, start over.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Can't you just manually edit post counts? The technical answer is yes, but if we did that any time we ever wanted to sync up the database or restore things we'd have to go in and manually edit them back (as a recount would just count the posts made and would not factor in our manual entry so it would be very labor intense considering the number of members). But what we could potentially do (and I say potentially because its not something I personally would want to do nor would I want anyone else to do it) would be to create a new category where people could put in there old post count (call it something) so that number would still kind of stay so to speak. I figure this site is still young (in terms of the net) so it won't take too long till we are celebrating many more great accomplishments and it will be great doing so on a server enviornment that works right. NorthSideSox72
I don't care about post counts, but I do like having access to all the previous posts. That would be the downside, to me - having a seperate site and a current site to look at for various things. If the database basics are remaining static (meaning you aren't change the type of DB you use), you may also be able to import the old data into the new format (of the message board layer software allows for that, and hasn't changed its architecture from version to version). WCSox
By all means, do what you guys have to do. I'm thankful that a handfull of people are still willing to do this for free! If you can save the active user accounts, great. If not, no big deal.

What we would do is essentially archive this site and have it accessible at soxtalk.net (we own that domain as well) and have the posts turned off but you could always go through and look at it. Than Soxtalk.com would have all of the new posts and everything would be fresh (we stlil use the same mysql database but the problem is our database, which is absolutely ginormous...think about a notepad document that is well over a couple gigs) is corrupt and we can't go in and get rid of that corruption without spending a lot of money (cause none of us have the knowledge to do so and from the sounds of it it is also a very labor intense project). So basically put you would still be able to see the site, looking like it does now (with on ads on the .net version) but it would be a non working version (aside from looking at posts). In a year or two this place would really be the only place most look (aside from the ocassional glance to see the 05 archive or whatever else people are curious about). I say don't worry about post counts... If you're a good/reputable poster, others will know. They don't need a post count to see that. Though, I do understand why someone with like 20,000 posts would want to keep that # b/c they've spent a lot of time on this board. Oh, and I for one would really love an archive b/c in a few years it will be a lot of fun looking back on old posts and seeing who we wanted to trade/trade for, etc.
rangercal
Jason, Why don't you put up some advertising. ( like google adsense) I know all kinds of other programs where you can generate money from soxtalk. With the profits you can use it towards the site. I don't see why anyone here would be against that.

BearSox
faster and more efficient board > post counts... also, I was over at a vbulletin board and they have this awesome thing called a rep system. I think that is a much better way to determine the good poster from the not so good poster ... but I am not sure if invision boards have that. Harry Chappas
Can you do it after this season. New stuff -new season - new outlook. Let this site retire peacefully upon the conclusion of the 2007 campaign. IMHO, I still want to be known as an under 500 member, gives my nonsense thoughts some cred. ZoomSlowik
Not having the site go down everytime something major happens would be pretty nice, I care about the quality of my posts a lot more than my count, as the length of some of them will show.
