Boras says A-Rod assured to reach $30M annually

Anyone still think the White Sox are going to go after A-Rod? NY would have to pick up an awful lot of that salary (say 75%) for it to work in this budget.

"After the New York Yankees on Wednesday indicated they would break from tradition and negotiate during the season with Alex Rodriguez on a contract extension, his agent moved in quickly to define what it would take to keep the superstar third baseman playing in New York.

And that would be unprecedented millions per season.

In a telephone interview with the New York Post, Scott Boras said Rodriguez assuredly will become Major League Baseball's first $30 million-a-year player.

However, Boras said he will not take up the Yankees' offer to negotiate before the season ends.

"We are not going to be negotiating during the season," Boras said. Boras insisted he could see no way that strategy will change, saying "This is Alex's decision. This has been his policy, and I fully expect this to continue to be his policy."

MLB sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that the Yankees were willing to negotiate with Rodriguez -- under the condition that he agrees not to opt out of his current contract after this season and that he agrees to tack on any extension to that deal, which expires after the 2010 season.

Even if his client doesn't go the opt-out route, Boras told the Post that there are existing stipulations in the current deal that all but guarantee Rodriguez would earn a minimum of $32 million in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

"The way the provision operates, he either gets that or he can become a free agent after any of those seasons again," Boras told the newspaper.

Approximately one-third of the remaining $81 million of the current contract is being paid by the Texas Rangers, which was part of the trade that brought Rodriguez to New York.

Though the Yankees are underperforming so far this season, it's not Rodriguez's fault. He led the major leagues at the All-Star break with 30 home runs and 86 RBIs and has a .317 average."

Its amazing to me that with the Rangers and now the Yankees, the teams arent competitive when Arod is putting up all-century numbers. With the Rangers, it made a little more sense because they pretty much had all of their eggs ($) in the Arod basket and couldnt afford much else. But with the Yankees, jeez this guy is just another large salary on an all star team. True, their pitching is nottatoogood, but they should be able to pound their way to the playoffs if anything.

no human being on the face of this earth is worth $30 million a year.

Not true. If that player in return brings in more $$$ in revenue from ads and marketing, merchandise sales, increased ticket sales and any revenue from potential championships he helps attain then they are worth that much. Not saying ARod is, but MJ probably was.

Great post. I think that was the major justification for the posting fee the Red Sox paid for Matsuzaka.

If ARod opts out of his contract, he's no longer a Yankee. Why would they pay 75% of his salary?

I don't think he'll get $30 million if he opts out. The Yankees are one of the only teams that can afford to pay that amount - and even they would have trouble doing that and satisfying the rest of their team. Right now, ARod makes $27 million, and Texas pays a good chunk of that. That's why the Yankees want to extend the contract starting in 2010, because Texas is still on the hook for a portion of his salary until then. If ARod opts out, the Yankees will let him walk (he's not a "true Yankee" anyway, right, so the fans wouldn't take it out on management, they'd take it out on ARod). ARod wouldn't want to return to Yankee stadium as a visitor, so he'll end up in the NL with the Cubs or Dodgers. However, there's a pretty good chance he'll take what the Yankees are offering. Nobody is going to make a mistake like the Rangers did and offer him way more than the market price, and with so few teams available to pay big money, he might not even get what he makes now.

A side issue here is now that borass has thrown that out there, if Arod opts out, and no team offers him a $30 million + deal, he will start screaming about collusion. So, you will get at least one dumbass owner who will be willing to pay that. Not worth it.

If Selig and the owners allow Cuban to buy the Cubs, then that's where ARod will be and Cuban will pay whatever Boras wants.

Like I said, there will be at least one dumbass onwer who will pay.

If he starts screaming collusion if ARod gets $25 mill a year instead of $30 mill a year, I think the case will get thrown out rather quickly.
