Heads22
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 10, 2007 -> 01:01 PM) Like I said, I certainly prefer other players to Owens. But when I say "OK", I am saying I think Owens can get on base at a .330-.350 clip, which is only slightly higher than what he is doing since his July callup (which is .327). Add to that some significant speed and basestealing talent, and good defense in CF (other than a sub-standard arm), and if he is your Plan C or D, that ain't too bad. Let's just hope we don't get to Plan D. That seems to be where we differ - you think he can get on base at .315, I think he can do 20 or 30 more points than that in his first full season. His hitting keeps improving, and he is taking more walks also. That isn't spectacular, but a significant improvement from what we've gotten out of the position in recent years (especially when you tack on the stolen bases). And I disagree with whomever said he isn't a CF. He looks pretty decent out there to me, and his arm has been bothered by a slight injury. He's is certainly no Rowand or Hunter or Anderson, but he's about league average and he's improving as time goes on. That was me and I continue to think he's a substandard CF. He's passable, but there's a dramatic dropoff from BA and Erstad to him. His arm has been that weak forever though.

Chisoxfn
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 10, 2007 -> 10:07 AM) Oh come on now. I know people here aren't big Owens fans for the most part, but jeez, the guy has done pretty well since his recent call-up, continues to improve his hitting and has been a pleasant surprise on defense. It amazes me that people wanted BA to keep playing all year while never reaching .200, and some of those same people wrote off Owens before he even got here (despite that he has been far more productive than Anderson was his first year). Believe me, I'd rather have Rowand or Hunter or someone else high caliber out there in CF in 2008, and have Owens as the 4th OF, if that situation can work. But if we can't get that done, I think Owens will probably do OK in a full season out there. He would probably be better than we got out of the CF position offensively in 2005, 2006 or 2007. 2006 & 2007...no way will he do better than Rowand's 05 (even if Rowand wasn't that great during 2005, he was still solid especially when you factor in his defense). I agree though, a lot of people have written Owens off. He has made some strides, but the thing I don't like his he's mediocre defensively in Cf (with a bad arm) and I'm not sure he has the ability to hit for a good enough average. He has actually impressed me with his base stealing (he still needs to work on getting better jums, but overall he's made a lot of strides in this department over the course of the season) and he does a nice job looking at pitches (and I can definitely see him being a guy who can draw a lot of walks). I even like how he's willing to go opposite field, however, he goes there so often that I think for him to be succesful he will have to learn to turn on the inside pitch (which will hopefully give him a few extra base hits as well). Mix that in with higher walk totals (and lower k's, which could happen as he learns to lay off a few more of those breaking balls) and you have a pretty darn good top of the order hitter. The only thing is, I hate pencilling him in out there when the club has so many other weaknesses.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 10, 2007 -> 11:16 AM) Dave Roberts got no where near $10M a year. He got nearly half that. I want David DeJesus. He's going to be dealt this offseason and his value is way down after his slugging% took a huge hit this season. I want him. Plus IIRC he was signed to a relatively affordable extension about a season ago. I'd be all about this as I think Dejesus is a pretty solid all around ball player. 29andPoplar
Plus IIRC he was signed to a relatively affordable extension about a season ago. I'd be all about this as I think Dejesus is a pretty solid all around ball player. A couple of years ago many would have said no way would they cut a deal with KC, being in the division and all. But the Sox front office has opened that avenue up with the KC front office so if there's a match up it's possible. KC may be getting out of the realm of just acquiring cheap prospects and may want guys who can contribute right now. Anyways I would agree, DeJesus is a very viable target and no I do not think Owens is a long term solution for a team that wants to compete. He has made progress but has a long way to go. You correctly identify being able to turn and burn on an inside pitch as being a definite weakness. To me, Owens is a guy you trade for a targeted bullpen arm to some team that is impressed with the 24 stolen bases. Not minimizing Jerry's contributions by any means, just stating my views. southsideirish71
The machine is starting early. Getting his name out to the sox beat reporters, and the continuous fluffing of someone that KW obviously has a thing for. More high fives as we pass up on Alvarez to pick up the more signable Jordan Danks. The fluffing of Jordan Danks by members of the media. Jordan is a unique talent as a 6-foot-5 leadoff batter. In 35 games for Team USA, he batted .287 with four doubles, two home runs, 12 RBIs and five stolen bases. He led the team with 37 runs and 25 walks. Now maybe Gonzales should of taken a look at what Pedro did in that tourney. Alvarez, an All-American third baseman, hit .315 with a team-leading seven home runs and 30 RBI Edited September 11, 2007 by southsideirish71

With any pick between 1 and 3 the Sox will have to take the best player available but if they finished with say the 9th pick there's no doubt in my mind they'd take Jordan Danks, no doubt. At this point, anyone can make a game thread whenever they want.
southsideirish71
Jim at Sox Machine on Greg Walker. I find it interesting that Iguchi started to hit at a higher rate shortly after going to the Phillies. Then you have Rowand, Ordonez, basically when people leave they hit better. Balta1701
Huh? It's another reason the Sox have given an extended look to left-handed, submarine-style specialist Mike Myers, who has been used for more than one batter in recent outings. "We want to continue to look at Mike and work with Mike and continue to see if he is a fit for us next year," Cooper said. "Right now, I'd have to say yeah, he would be an option for us." witesoxfan
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 10:45 AM) Jerry Owens is quietly putting together an awesome SEPT Awesome's a strong word. A good September is better. He's getting on base at a ridiculous rate, which is indeed very good and something that makes him a valuable player. One extra base hit - meaning he has an Iso of .020 - is terrible. He's making a case for being a 4th outfielder for the team next year, and that's something I wouldn't object to, so long as they add some power to the bench as well. Fields was QB when they had that one WR Rashaun Woods, right? I thought he was going to be a very good WR -- from the games I saw him in, it just looked like he had an uncanny ability to find the ball and go and get it.
