Saw Milk over the weekend. Very solid biopic.

I'm just amazed that the murder of the SF Mayor and Harvey Milk at City Hall isn't something being taught in school. It's the first time that I even heard of the tragedy.

My wife was away at job training for most of the week so I used the opportunity to watch the entire LOTR extended trilogy over six consecutive nights. I still think those are outstanding films all in all.

First time i watched the lord of the rings (theatrical versions) i turned on the fellowship of the ring at 1 a.m. and i eventually got done with the return of the king a little past 10. It was definitely worth it... as you mentioned they are rather outstanding.

Holy balls. If Tom Cruise sticks to comedy, I might actually like him a tiny bit. Him in Tropic Thunder is f***ing hilarious!

Also, has anyone seen "The Foot Fist Way"?

I thought "the foot fist way" was really terrible.

State of Play 3.5 stars

Sunshine Cleaning 3.5 stars (well, I'm a sucker for Emily Blunt and Alan Arkin, poor man's Little Miss Sunshine)

Crank 2 2.75

It's really hard to rank Crank 2 quantitatively. It's really out there...with some stuff meant to press some buttons. The visual style is very unique and distinctive, for sure. The only thing that really annoyed me was Bai Ling as a crack whore...she has more talent than that as an actress. Of course, she was supposed to be a "stereotype" and give the SE Asian version of Bobby Jindal, but c'mon. You can use her more inventively...and Bai Ling, it wouldn't hurt to gain a little weight!

To be honest, I liked the first Crank quite a bit better. The concept/idea was very unique at the time, and the "heroes" and "villains" were more clear.

I wish Statham would take a little time to get away from his bread and butter (Transporter, Death Race, Crank) and do more movies with depth like The Bank Job.

He literally seems to "crank" out those action movies that do fairly well in the US (they definitely have a niche audience) and also very well internationally...I know that last year all of his movies came out in Thailand almost right away. He's very well liked in the Asian market.

BA can only hope to have as many hunnies as Statham.

LOL, what makes you think Bai Ling is such a good actress? Is it because she said a few days ago that she aspired to become an Oscar winner and she will do it? She hasnt done anything worth crap since the Crow, and even then her 5 minutes of screen time wasnt that great

She's just having a tough time converting from a Chinese actress to an American one...like Ziyi Zhang, she's been rejected by a lot of her countrymen for "selling out" and also appearing in Playboy, among other things.

I think she is talented when speaking Chinese as her first language, but converting isn't very easy.

Look at the struggle of Penelope Cruz...except she receives an Academy Award for being unintelligible and "cute."

She is freaking crazy and plays herself off as the crack whore quite well. Penelope Cruz is not even close to comparable to the mess that is Bai Ling

Which means she has more talent than you think, because she's nothing like that in real life...

She was on LoveLine last week and kept interrupting Drew while he was giving advice, giving totally different advice. Drew's reactions were pretty funny cuz she was acting all Anne Heche like.

When I walked into a theater at Viacom's midtown headquarters for an advance screening of the new J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Trek" prequel on Wednesday night, I felt like that kid who hadn't done her homework - for an entire semester.

And yet that was crucial to my assignment: to see if it was possible for someone completely new to the "Star Trek" universe to understand, process, and more importantly enjoy this new film.

Here's my background. I had never seen any of the prior "Star Trek" films or television series. I knew little more than the fact that it's all about a bunch of people flying a spaceship called the Enterprise, that Leonard Nimoy played an extraterrestrial named Spock who had funny ears and liked to say "Live long and prosper," and that the Klingon language has such a rabid following that the Bible has been translated into it.

Technically, the closest I'd come to seeing anything related to "Star Trek" was the 1998 parody "Galaxy Quest," in which the actors from a washed-up Trek-like TV show are enlisted by benevolent aliens who think they're the real thing (Little-known fact: That was the first movie role for Justin "I'm a Mac" Long). But I'm also a huge fan of Abrams' hit series "Lost," so I suppose I had a leg up there.

So here is my verdict: This movie is awesome.

LOL. Ok.

Umm...because she was joking around at a porn star's birthday party (acting very much in character of her Crank II role), she's not talented?

Most Asian girls are like white girls anyway, they're not intuitively good dancers unless they practice. However, if you've been to Bangkok or Manila, there are just as many awesome "coyote" dancers there as there as anywhere in the world.

You can google them.

By the way, saw the movie "Sugar" about the Dominican baseball player in the minors. I would advise to wait for the DVD. Like all baseball movies, most of the action on the field wasn't up to par...especially the throwing arms of the infielders. Overall, it was worth seeing, but not paying $9-10 for a ticket.

Some of the action took place in Iowa, and was based on the "Swing of the Quad Cities," although they called the city "Bridgetown" instead of the Quad Cities and it was the Kansas City Knights (Royals?) franchise instead.

One area where the movie was very effective was showing the life off the field, the difficult transition to America...culture in general...the "host" family was a born-again Christian stereotype, so that tangent of the movie kind of took the focus away from the central plot IMO.

Most minor league baseball players these days have their own apartments that they share (except for the bonus babies) and so I'm not sure how realistic that was...think it was just a story-telling device to make the movie more dramatic.

Kenny Williams would have enjoyed one part of it. The 2B on the team was a million dollar plus draftee from Stanford who also happened to be African-American (Brad Johnston) who tried to talk to the Dominican pitcher (Santos, the star) before he was called up to replace an injured infielder at Wichita.

They also showed a scene popping some kind of illegal pills/performance enhancers but didn't really go anywhere with that subplot either.

I would give it 2.5/4 stars.

One thing it did capture well was the pressure for Dominican kids from their families to get signed and "go to the States" and then just the pressure in the minor leagues to hold your position with all the competition from below...sometimes we don't have full appreciation for how hard it is to play just A or high A level baseball, and how many players get cut off at that stage or never come close to making the majors.

Wow, that is solid reasoning. Maybe we should all just ignore her shoplifting craziness as well because she is such a great actress and dances like a white girl or a "coyote" dancer(whatever the f*** that means)

Caulfield, you make no sense

Review of Sugar...http://qctimes.com/entertainment/columnists/linda-cook/article_765f681e-30d9-11de-bdb4-001cc4c002e0.html

So now we just throw in the towel on anyone who has ever been accused or convicted of a crime??? And that has something to do with her talent or lack thereof?

This is real life, not "The Handmaid's Tale."

Coyote dancers are not "white dancers," by the way. Didn't you see Coyote Ugly?

Crank 2 was entertaining, action packed and hillarious. It was awesome, I loved it.

Have you ever in your entire life been able to stay on point in a conversation?

Watched "Let the Right One In" last night. Unfortunately watched the version with the crappy subtitles. For some reason the dvd doesn't have the original theatrical subtitles. Lot of people complaining about that on amazon. Still enjoyed it but I can see how better translated subtitles would have enhanced my experience. I think a 14 year old did the translation on the dvd.

Man that sucks, I wonder who botched that. I got to see it in theatres here and really loved it.
