I've enjoyed a number of comic book film adaptations - the genre seems to translate pretty well.

Video game to movie, on the other hand... has anything been made in that genre that hasn't been laughable garbage?

It's not the genre that transfer's well, it's never the genre. It's the storyteller/filmmaker that translate it well. Video game movies are trash right now, yes, and I'm not sure why I'm going to defend them here because I'm against it as well, but to assume that there is no wiggle room to improve is silly. I mean, for every good comic book movie, there are 10 behind it that are awful.

To shut off an entire genre because nothing good has come out of it yet isn't right. Ask Stephen King why.

Somewhat aside from the point, the main reason why I don't like these (comic book adaptations and video game adaptations) movies is because they carry no substance. It's not impossible to give them substance, but I'm still waiting for it. I enjoy entertainment, so I go and see most of the movies, but I don't praise them because I have yet to see one that is, in any way, special. And even if I do see one that is great, I won't praise the genre, I'll praise that one single movie.

I mostly call for these movies to die because they (Hollywood) don't treat them as sotires, but rather a genre. If, instead, they picked movies that are truly good stories and films instead of what they think people want to see, the movie industry and movies, at least in terms of quality, would improve greatly.

Hopefully Watchmen changes things in the genre for you

I think all this Riddler and Robin crap is just deliberate misinformation. A few weeks ago it was Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Angelina Jolie. As far as I know, a script hasnt even been started yet, so there is really no point in worrying about the actors in a movie thats at best 2 years away

Nolan has stated that he would not introduce Robin until many films in, if at all, since this about a younger Batman. Also, do you really think they would introduce three major characters into the next film? I think its a bit much. Plus, with the way the Joker was portrayed in a darker fashion, wouldnt it lead you to believe that the Riddler would be written similarly? I just dont buy that Eddie Murphy would be able to pull that off and doubt that Nolan would either. I wouldnt mind Rachel Weisz as Catwoman though. Not my first choice, but she's on the short list.

I believe it's a reference to Shakespeare's 7 pounds of flesh. Probably 7 organ donations.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

While I think the story is bogus and it doesn't really matter, I must add this..

You are kidding yourself if you thought Heath Ledger was going to be a badass Joker when it was announced he got that part.

I totally agree, I heard so many brokeback joker jokes after he was selected. I totally trust Nolan's judgement at this point. If he feels Murphy(shudder) is the man for the job, I will agree

I didnt. But I dont know how I could see Eddie Murphy portraying a darker version of the Riddler (assuming for now that thats the direction they will go) and take him seriously. JMO.

I was shocked when I saw Ledger was the pick, but my exact statements were "it could be interesting". Ledger at least has chops as a decent actor. Murphy is just a comic who would bring no believability to the role. Thank God its not happening.

Well, to be clear, I was only dismissing the films of the genre to date - not its future. It may improve.

And while I agree with your general point that the genre isn't as important as other aspects, I do think it has some effect. Taken as a whole, sort of on a net basis, some genres do better than others in film. Some printed word genres just have more or less difficult dynamics to put to screen and screenplay.

Also, I think that "substance" is a highly relative and subjective term. I think the basic storyline of most comic book films is indeed quite simple, but that doesn't mean it lacks substance necessarily. I felt that The Dark Knight had quite a bit of substance, as did Batman Begins.

The Batman film series as a whole, under multiple directors, has had a knack for turning actors into success in roles that seemed outside their strengths. I mean, I recall the laughter from most circles of the idea of Mr. Mom playing Batman in the first film, but he turned out to be pretty good for it. Jim Carrey was an excellent Riddler IMO, though the film itself was mostly garbage. Ledger really made his role work well too.

Tim Robbins is tipped to play Howard Stark, father of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in the "Iron Man" sequel reports Latino Review.

Gerard Sanders played Howard in a montage during the first film. The reason for the recasting is due to an important flashback sequence in the feature that helps set up both "The Avengers" and "Captain America" films.

Thus it seems likely Howard Stark's character is involved in the Super Soldier program. Hawkeye and Black Widow are also said to be a part of the story of the next film.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group reports that in its first week of sales, "The Dark Knight" has sold over 1.7 million Blu-ray Discs and 11.8 million DVDs worldwide - combining to a healthy payout of around $200 million.

The film is already the best selling Blu-ray title in history and will become the best selling 2008 title overall this week, passing "Iron Man" which currently holds the top spot.

Meanwhile the English tabloids are reporting completely unfounded wild rumours that Eddie Murphy is playing The Riddler, Rachel Weisz is Catwoman and Shia LaBeouf is Robin in the next "Batman" film even though they likely won't begin casting for another year.

I agree with Jim Carrey being an excellent Riddler, but I dont think that was a role that was outside his strength. I think that was Jim Carrey all the way.

But I agree for the most part about your point. Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Michelle Pfeiffer were not really highly regarded in those roles prior to the film.

I got really tired of all the billboards of products in the background of the first one and threw my hands in the air when their vehicle was a Dodge and they made a joke about having a Hemi in it. What a schill. Alba looked so stupid in a wedding dress stopping that helicopter and the script was poorly written again. I couldn't stop laughing when The Thing's (who reminds me of one of the live action TMNT) blind girlfriend said "I'll see you upstairs."

One of the Bens that replace Ebert and Roeper said "The Wrestler" is the best year of the movie and it's not even close. With 44 reviews in it currently has a perfect 100% at rotten tomatoes.

http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/atm/

It's down to 97% after 2 negative reviews.

Aronofsky inflicts as much pain on the audience as self-flagellating Ram Jam does when brutalizing/mutilating himself in and outside the ring.

Pineapple Express was incredibly funny. When Saul busts his foot through the windshield, it might be one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen.

My rankings for recent comedies:

1a) Role Models

1b) Pineapple Express

2) Step Brothers

3a) Knocked Up

3b) Superbad

4a) Forgetting Sarah Marshall

4b) 40 Year Old Virgin

5) Zack and Miri Make a Porno
