YASNY
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 22, 2007 -> 10:48 AM) Ty Cobb or Mickey Mantle. I say Cobb just because he was a psycho f***, and Mantle because playing drunk and hungover always makes you better than playing sober, everyone knows that. Babe Ruth. Who knows what was in all those hot dogs he used to eat?

Gregory Pratt
WRONG. It's not popular knowledge. I of the great interest in steroids + baseball didn't even know it until last night/this morning. It is Pud Galvin, who used to inject monkey testosterone before pitching. He was also baseball's first three hundred game winner.
knightni
So, the location of where he injected is how he got his nickname, right?

Balta1701
MLB to name a lifetime achievement award after Buck O'Neil, erect a statue of him in Cooperstown. The statue, to be designed and created by renowned sculptor Williams Behrends, will be dedicated next July during the annual Hall of Fame induction weekend in Cooperstown, N.Y. The Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award will honor an individual whose extraordinary efforts enhanced baseball's positive impact on society, has broadened the game's appeal, and whose character, integrity and dignity are comparable to the qualities exhibited by O'Neil. NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 01:18 PM) The Brewers decline Geoff Jenkins' option. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3086562 Power lefty who plays LF - if you can handle 150 Ks a year. You know what? I think I like the idea of this guy on the team. Assuming we start ST with Fields in left and Crede at 3B, there is always the chance Crede is unhealthy or gets traded. Plus even if not, the corner OF's this team has (Fields, Dye) are righties. And the bench players the team is looking at are not power guys. I'm thinking, for the right money, he's maybe a good fit. His numbers have declined a lot, so I think he can be had for a lot less than his current 7.3M. For $4M or $5M, maybe he isn't a bad investment. Anyone know about his defensive abilities? Gregory Pratt
Bill Bavasi, being Bill Bavasi, has a great new idea: bring back Sandy Koufax On a day when two of baseball’s senior pitchers – Curt Schilling and Greg Maddux – signed contracts for the 2008 season, Seattle Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi might have had the line of the week. Asked if he could have one pitcher from today’s free-agent market, Bavasi deadpanned: “Sandy Koufax. What is he, 70? I’d still take him.” Koufax, actually 71, retired after the 1966 season – when he was 27-9 with a 1.73 ERA. In three of his last four seasons, Koufax pitched more than 300 innings. “One year when I was with the Angels, I talked to Sandy late in the season,” Bavasi said. “We were trying to win the division, and I teased him. I said, ‘Do you remember when you held out for $125,000 when my dad (Buzzie) was the GM of the Dodgers?’ “Sandy said he remembered. So I said, ‘I’ll give you that money right now for two starts.’ He just laughed.” Schilling, who turns 41 next week, signed an $8 million contract with Boston that included $3 million more in incentives – plus a $2 million bonus for weight clauses if he stays under a certain number of pounds. He’ll get $333,333 for each time he passes one of six random monthly weigh-ins. Maddux, 42, re-signed with San Diego for $10 million. It does make one wonder: What would Koufax command on the open market, even at 71? (I know he was kidding. I just thought it was pretty funny.) witesoxfan
From rotoworld Jake Peavy was the unanimous selection as the NL Cy Young Award winner on Thursday, netting all 32 first-place votes. Brandon Webb was listed second on every ballot except for one. Someone picked Aaron Harang over him even though Webb had the better ERA by a large margin (3.01 to 3.73) and threw a few more innings. Brad Penny received 14 third-place votes to finish third ahead of Harang (10 points), Carlos Zambrano (3), John Smoltz (2), Cole Hamels (2), Jose Valverde (2) and Jeff Francis (1). apparently, wsf101 has a vote...who knew? jackie hayes
Astros trade for Oscar Villareal; rotoworld's take: It's great to have Ed Wade back in the GM chair, simply because he's so predictable. At least now he's trading for veteran middle relievers rather than overpaying to land them as free agents. Tee hee.
jackie hayes
Really? Nobody has anything to say about Aubrey Huff's radio appearance? Warning: NOT SAFE FOR WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No, really. But if you're still determined, go to deadspin.com, search for "huff", and click on the "Aubrey Huff Admires 'Works Of Art'" link. It's more or less porn. Maybe that's good, maybe that's bad.
