Balta1701
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 10:51 PM) If Poreda eventually made it as a 2006 version of Matt Thorton -- I'm talking dominant lefty setup man -- would people really be that pissed? I mean, I know Porcello was taken immediately afterwords, but I'd have to think that getting a great reliever with the 25th (?) overall pick is better than the 'expected value' of that pick. Honestly, yes, I'd be somewhat annoyed, if not pissed. To me, with a first round draft pick, you have to pick a guy who you think will end up as a starter or a closer. Middle Relief is just so iffy overall, there's so much of it available, and the performance of it so inconsistent (see, 2005-2007 white Sox) that you can't spend first round picks on guys who only project there. If they think he'll take over for Bobby in 3 years, ok, that's a different story, but Middle Relief in the first round has to be viewed as a disappointment. CWSGuy406
QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 04:21 PM) That's known as a bust. Umm, no -- far from it. Matt Bush is a bust. If Poreda made a career out of being a dominant left-handed reliever, I'd imagine that would be better than the 'average' value of a 25th overall pick. ---------- I'm not saying the Sox should focus on turning Poreda into a reliever, BTW. It's just an example, I know, but I hope he turns out better than Thornton. He's been good 1 year. I'd be fine with it so long as if he is traded at some point within the next 3 years that he has more value than to acquire an aged Roberto Alomar. Considering how Poreda was drafted with the intention of starting, if his career is as a middle reliever someone once again failed in their assessment of a draft pick. Dbaho is correct in assuming some would flame the selection.
Heads22
I really doubt they drafted him for a relief role.

Now we have forearm tightness (often a symptom of compensating for shoulder problems) and reducing Poreda's workload to a reliever. Any wanna bet this guy can sustain the innings to make it to the big leagues let alone as a starter? If some guy blogging for THT can see future problems in a cursory look, what was the Sox staff doing? Nice new direction.

What's to say it is in fact a long term problem? The people who wanted to hate on this pick found a reason to and the rest of us can wait because the half year after a guy is drafted is almost never significant.
