SoxFan1
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 12:04 PM) Well, unfortunately, Dye doesn't seem to be nearly as good of a fit for Atlanta as Tex. Tex is there next year if Jones walks, so they still have that bat then, Tex plays 1b at a GG level, Dye is an OF, the Braves have some of the worst production in MLB out of their 1b slot, and the Braves have Francoeur, Harris, and Jones all producing well in the OF for them. I just don't see why that deal would make sense for the Braves. Well, I'm thinking from the perspective of pinning ATL/NYM against each other for a bat, and also to see if they had any interest at all in Dye. I don't think he'd be a good fit either, but I wouldn't really care as long as we got a good return.
CWSGuy406
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) What happens if the Braves manage to resign Tex? Need I even comment on how unlikely that is?
Gregory Pratt
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) Hah, this was predictable. JS is giving up six years of Salty -- a catcher who, if he wasn't behind McCann, could probably step in and be one of the top eight catchers in all of baseball -- along with some other good prospects for a year-and-a-half of Tiexera. Basically, if Atlanta doesn't win it this year, I can't see this being a very good trade for Atlanta... It's as predictable as people saying, "Oh, no, they've given up so much!" They haven't given up anything more than what they can afford.
CWSGuy406
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 05:07 PM) It's as predictable as people saying, "Oh, no, they've given up so much!" They haven't given up anything more than what they can afford. It's all about value. The value of a catcher with the skills of Salty are much more rare than the value of a player with the skills of Teixera playing first-base. I will say this. JS has, quite obviously, earned his own 'leeway' with trades and other transactions, so I'll keep my mouth shut.

CWSGuy406
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 05:12 PM) What should they have given Salty up for? A pitcher, perhaps? Have you noticed through the blue-and-red shades that they have no fourth or fifth starter? Or that they just made a trade (McBride for Ledezma) that looks extremely silly now that Ledezma has been DFA'd?
Gregory Pratt
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 12:16 PM) A pitcher, perhaps? Have you noticed through the blue-and-red shades that they have no fourth or fifth starter? Or that they just made a trade (McBride for Ledezma) that looks extremely silly now that Ledezma has been DFA'd? Pitching's good, but they could really use a boost at first. There probably wasn't anything worth biting on available for pitching. PS: why are you insinuating that I'm wearing 3D glasses?

Gregory Pratt
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 12:41 PM) Your constant posts about Schuerholz are probably a start. ATL is stacked right now, lineup wise. They are the clear front-runner in the NL, at least IMO, so it's hard to complain about the deal. With that said, as Keith eluded to, the pitching looks like it could have been a concern, and maybe ATL looks to bolster the staff, hell, maybe with a Garland or Vazquez.. I just think "red and blue glasses" sounds silly, since the expression is rose-colored glasses, but whatever. Atlanta is a very handsome city and organization. I'm sure Schuerholz called about Garland or Vazquez but the conversation ended fairly soon for a variety of reasons. Money, and our asking price, I'm sure, were pre-eminent, and I don't believe that Schuerholz and KW get along very well based on their lack of significant history and the kind of things Schuerholz says in his book. Kyyle23
Hmm, Texas getting Saltamacchia also improves the Cubs chances of dealing for Mahay and Laird. I wonder if Pie will end up being another "One who got away"?

BearSox
I like this deal for both teams. While Salty and co. were a steep price to pay for Tex, it is a price a team has to pay if they want to win now. I've always liked Tex and he is a very good hitter. He will give a team a .280+ avg, 30+ dingers, and 100+ rbi's and a 850+ OPS. Plus, he can hit from both sides of the plate. They had no room for Salty and the other guys are just prospects. santo=dorf
I wouldn't want to deal with Atlanta with their prospects. Ask Beane how his sack of peanuts for Tim Hudson is working out for him. Andy Marte had more hype than Saltalamacchia (refuse to call him "Salty) and he's in his third organization doing nothing right now. John Schuerholz pitys no man. Gregory Pratt
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 05:27 PM) Is Schuerholz breast feeding you? Jesus, you've been hanging on him for about a week now. Schuerholz is my Liriano. He's also very good at finding Latin American players, by the way. He would've signed King Felix but Felix loved Freddy too much. Other Latin players -- Furcal, most recently, and Andrus come to mind -- too, so you should be all over him. The truth is that Schuerholz is the model of not just good but outstanding GMing, and that is entirely relevant to the matter at hand. Besides, you have no room to lecture me about admiring another organization.
Balta1701
This last consideration may not bother many, but Salty has an unusual family situation. Now 21, he married a teacher at his high school in West Palm Beach, Fla., who is now 37, according to records. His wife Ashley, who recently gave birth to their second child, insisted to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that their personal relationship didn't begin until the fall of 2004, when Salty was 18. The Rangers apparently are aware of Salty's unusual family situation and are said to believe he's maturing. Besides, switch-hitting catchers are hard to come by. iamshack
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2007 -> 06:30 PM) SI Weird. In all honesty, I think Schulerholz is doing a very intelligent thing. Playing on the ridiculous value of prospects right now and acquiring some veteran certainty in exchange for cost certainty. He's basically going against the grain of the market right now, selling high before the market corrects itself after some of these prospects flame out and teams realize they've traded proven veterans for squat.
