NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(Cknolls @ Aug 22, 2007 -> 09:56 AM) Did anyone read Dennis Byrne in the Chicago Tribune. Pretty good piece. Where is the outrage over the steel plants pollution of the Lake. How about the city of Chicago's polluting of the River system. BP is not even in the same ball park as these two but they are an easy target because they are the evil oil company.. 1. Legislation occurred to CHANGE what BP is doing to make things WORSE. The steel companies were restricted at their levels of pollution some time ago, and have stayed there. Protesting the steel companies accomplishes little. Doing so to BP may actually accomplish something. 2. What BP is trying to do is illegal - what the steel companies are doing is not. 3. There has been plenty of outrage from some of us at polluters in general - in your view, do we need to be constantly posting about every single one of them in order for this specific one to be justified? 4. Legislation was hard-fought and enforced to keep pollution in the lake down (levels were dropped significantly with the Clean Water Act and other legislation). Here, we see a potential movement backwards. Of course there is outrage, as there should be. We drink out of that lake, last I checked. 5. I'd like to hear you tell us why you think this is OK. FlaSoxxJim
I don't know what you put in that letter, Northside, but it seems to have done the trick: CHICAGO (WBBM) The manager of British Petroleum's Whiting, Indiana, refinery said Thursday that the company will not dump additional waste into Lake Michigan despite having the nessecary permits to do so. WBBM's Regine Schlesinger reports. Manager Dan Sajkowski told the Mid-Day Club at downtown Chicago meeting that even though BP has permits to increase wastewater pollutants in the expansion project, it will not do so. The announcement follows weeks of uproar by environmentalists and politicians -- including Mayor Richard M. Daley and Senator Dick Durbin -- upset that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management approved BP's plan to dump 54 percent more ammonia and 35 percent more suspended solids into Lake Michigan. ``We will not make use of the higher discharge limits in our new permit,'' said BP America chairman and president Bob Malone. http://www.wbbm780.com/pages/849554.php?co...ontentId=832984

BigSqwert
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 21, 2007 -> 01:23 PM) I have looked around the BP website and cannot find anything helpful in terms of who to send a letter to. I've already written it. If any of you happen to have gotten a name and address, could you post it here for us to use? Thanks. Sorry for no response to this. I just read it now. Doesn't matter anymore though.
sox4lifeinPA
don't think the EPA is gonna approve of the dump I'm about to unload....it's definitely a violation of the clean water act.

southsider2k5
I think they realized that people were serious about this not happening. It would be nice to see people go after things like the City of Chicago and US Steel who dump way more into the Lake, but this is a start.
NorthSideSox72
I guess it ain't over until the fat stack belches. BP now wants a special exemption from federal limits on soot and particulate matter, which it was apparently in violation of already but hadn't been noticed. They now say the hardship is too much to make the fixes necessary. And again, oddly, the State of Indiana has given their blessing to the move, despite opposition by pretty much everyone else, including even the EPA. I am starting to think that Indiana is doing this because they are afraid BP will cut jobs in Indiana. I see no other motivation for their repeated moves to allow more pollution (which is easy for them to stomach since they kind of wrote Gary off decades ago anyway, and don't make much use of the lake). NorthSideSox72
Then again, maybe Indiana just really doesn't give a s*** if Lake Michigan becomes toxic.

NorthSideSox72
Good news in this case, though - the EPA is actually choosing to protect the environment. How novel.

Try being a banker here. Angry people, who don't appreciate a thing...except philly sports...but even then they only appreciate it when they're winning. I live up on a mountain now and it's awesome. 100 ft tall trees all around and the colors are amazing.
