BearSox
Speaking of the 40 man roster and September call ups, Egbert will most definitely be added to the 40 man. I could see Lucy being added and getting called up. Sweeney is going to get called up and hopefully get most of, if not all, of the time in LF. Pants Rowland
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 16, 2007 -> 05:27 PM) I can't imagine any other team in baseball being willing to give him a 1 year, $4-5 million deal next year, can you? In this day and age? Most definitely. I think he could be offered multiple years, too. If A-Rod leaves the Yankees, I could see them taking a flier on Crede easily. elrockinMT
QUOTE(TheOcho @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 02:26 AM) Like who? Carlos, Maggs? I doubt if Lee or Magglio we're still on this team we'd have a world series ring from '05. No way to know that of course, but we have let a number of others go or traded then away only to see things fizzle. It's all part of the game, but I think where the Sox have really gone wrong is the fact we continue to take castoffs or injury prone relief pitchers with the idea they can be resurrected in Chicago. The main reason in my opinion is the fact the team ownership wants to do it on the cheap as much as possible.
Harry Chappas
After watching Oakland, Minnesota, Boston and New York work pitchers over even when they are not scoring runs, it is mind numbing when it comes to the White Sox softball mentality. For KW to finally speak of this now makes him look really bad. Also the manager he employs does not believe in this concept whatsoever. Players shold not be added to the 40 man roster until they need to be not simply because Guillen wants to see them pitch in a lost season. 29andPoplar
Also the manager he employs does not believe in this concept whatsoever. Completely incorrect. He has spoken many times to the press this year about the need for better at bats, there have been lots of articles in the papers and on the White Sox site. Further, I have heard him personally in Tucson, dozens and dozens of times, talk about being selective at the plate. I really don't know where these misconceptions come from. 29andPoplar
Unfortunately, it's watching the performance of some of our hitters at the plate. There is a difference between the hitter's performances and what the manager's beliefs are. Big difference. I'm sure you heard or read Guillen harping on Uribe's escapades at the plate all year. If people can't tell the difference between how a player performs and what the manager wants, it's hopeless.

Its coming from the same people who actually believe Greg Walker tells the hitters to close your eyes and swing as hard as you can.

The fact that Juan Uribe plays daily, Alex Cintron still plays and Darin Erstad is treated like Rod Carew. The day Podsednik went down Iguchi should have been entered into the lead-off slot not the caravan on abysmal OBP guys that have been in there IMHO. Well, unfortunately, with the first 2 guys you mention, we don't have much of a choice right now. Pick your poison at SS. It's either them or Andy Gonzalez is your everyday shortstop. And people wonder why I say SS is by far a more important position to fix than any other for next year.

Still not as important as LF and CF. Uribe at SS is better than the current Erstad/Pods/Owens mess in LF/CF.
Allsox
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 06:21 PM) Still not as important as LF and CF. Uribe at SS is better than the current Erstad/Pods/Owens mess in LF/CF. I agree with you there. Owens is average at best in CF (His arm strength isn't good) but I don't want him near the leadoff spot since he doesn't bunt well enuff or walk to get on base very much. To me, he isn't an everyday player and is a cheaper, younger version of Mackowiak with a little more speed and that's about it. I don't want Erstad or Pods anywhere near this team in '08 and I don't see the Sox paying for A-Rod, who is the only guy worth anything on the SS market so Uribe would be fine for another yr here. One of them has to play. How exactly does that translate into Guillen not believing in OBP and selective hitting? Hint, it doesn't. Erstad is treated like Rod Carew. Oh ok. Your conclusion really should be this, the GM needs to acquire better players.

Your conclusion really should be this, the GM needs to acquire better players. It was as I stated above. I believe Guillen and Williams discuss what the teams needs. In four years together they have not gone after OBP guys now after everyone else has seen this they have decided to join the club. The whole concept stems from the pitch count and how when a guy is around 100 pitchesl, he is thought to be done for the day. I do not recall ever thinking of this until the last 4 years. Hence guys that work the count and have a higher OBP get the pitcher out of there as opposed to the 2 pitch at-bats.
