A 38 year old LOOGY who can't get out left hand hitters anymore who evidently no contending teams wanted for league minimum. This really is a ridiculous signing.

It makes a lot of sense when you look at this--- http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=5650

Thornton could be moved for a decent player, and be replaced with Myers, if Myers does decent. He's a had a track record vs. lefties over his career--moreso than Thornton.

The guy just got released and apparently no contenders even want him. If the Sox released Thornton, a contender would grab him in a heartbeat.

The key is, can Myers show the good stuff he's had the last few years. If so, the sox could trade Thornton for a solid contributor in the offseason [ala what the sox tried to do with Cotts]. With Logan already replacing Thornton in the 7th, 8th innings, vs. lefties and righties, Thornton could be moved. If Thornton can't get lefties out, he certainly won't be the sox LOGGY. Better to get some value for Matt now if the sox think he's been solved by the league. [Which in a radio interview, he said guys this year are swinging at his pitches, when last year they were waiting for him to throw a strike due to rep for wildness].

lefties are hitting .212 against Logan this year with 14 hits and 15 k's in 18 innings and only 1 home run. Myers did have a 2.66 ERA in 41 innings for NY yes, but he's 38 and the only reason this is happening is he's from around here. Also, lefties hit .312 against Myers in 18 innings and righties hit .182 in 22 innings, and lefties hit him better last year too. This singing is almost as confusing as those numbers, we already have our LOOGY in Boone (although he's not used right by Ozzie) and Myers is old and not even getting lefties out anymore. What we need is the true lefty that gets everybody out, and with the way Matt Thornton has looked this season, we don't have him yet.

Those numbers are confusing for sure

You would think we had the best bullpen in the world or something...and please don't give me the "we have a LOOGY" crap...if he gets righties out, use him against righties. Shocking, I know. It's so hard to compute...

If he was given a right handed throwing arm, sure he would get a lot of righties out for the whitesox. However he throws from the left side, which means that he will come in to face a lefty. Ozzie usually does matchups based on appendage matchups.

Well, historically, that's been the role he's been best at, and in all honesty, can't everyone agree that a Loogy is more valuable than a roogy to a team?

We may as well give him a shot trying to get a few lefties out. That's what we'd want him to do anyway. If he can't do that well any more, there's no reason to hold onto him as a Roogy; we have other guys who can do that.

I was reading that during his career Myers has held lefties to a .216 average. Granted it's been higher the last two seasons.

Also, it was nothing physical causing the problems. Supposedly release point issues combined with the most effective place to plant his left leg on the pitching rubber. Those things can be fixed, the Yankees this year didn't have the patience to deal with it. It's a good chance to take a look at this guy to see if he can help.

I don't mind the move at all.

As Beck said, if Myers can pitch well and get back to that 06 Yankee form, it gives us options in regards to Thornton, who could be dealt to help bring in a SS for example.

But what does Myers performance the rest of this season have to do with how he will perform next year? I'd rather get some young guy up who could use some experience and invite Myers to spring training. Swapping out Thornton for Myers does not strengthen the bullpen IMO.

We're going to use him like we should be using him -- lefty specialist like he's always been doing," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We're going to take a look at him to see what he can do for us this year, hopefully next year and see what he can help us.

...just like I am sure a lot of us thought.

Ozzie...please just listen to the damn numbers once he starts giving up hits to lefties again.
