Briggs crashed Ferrari?

Recommended Posts

I heard this on the way to work this morning that there was a brand new ferarri still with temporary tags crashed on one of the area expressways, with the driver missing. Then 20 minutes later I heard that the car was supposedly registered to Lance briggs. I turned to the Score, and heard nothing of it. Anyone else hear anything?

How about Tommie Harris driving without insurance then hitting a guy and skipping out on fixing the guy's car?

It was recently revealed that Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris was involved in a May accident on the Edens and was cited for driving an uninsured vehicle.

Harris is said to have explained that he rear-ended another car with his Range Rover because he was distracted while spitting his chewing tobacco.

(Driving under the influence of Copenhagen would be a new charge in my book.)

The driver whose car Harris hit had to go to considerable lengths to get the damage claim settled. Unable to get payment from Harris or an insurance agency, he eventually had to contact the team.

man, that would take some balls to call "the team." Imagine calling the Bears and asking for somebody to pay for your car that Tommie Harris smashed.

Well, if you called and said "pay for it or I'm going to the press with this information", you might get a pretty quick response.

Kind of like that guy last year who was trying to squeeze Superbowl tickets out of Chris Harris? ;)

So is this going to be the next trend for athletes? Drink while drunk, crash your car, leave the scene until you sober up, then admit to a single car accident.

Somehow, I doubt most drunk athletes who drive home will be able to plan well enough for them to only have a single car accident.

He was definitely drunk, and is very lucky he didn't crash into anybody else and wasn't injured and was able to ditch the scene and avoid a breathilized/blood test. By a streak of very dumb luck, he appears to be in great shape to avoid a lot of trouble. Athletes stupidity never ceases to amaze me though.

I realize this could be a likely scenerio, but come on. Posting libel comments aren't really necessary. If he was out and drinking someone saw him, and that will come to light. In the mean time, how about passing on the assumptions.

If assumptions and opinions (especially one acquired through common sense and reason like this one) aren't allowed on message boards, why do they exist? The Score and ESPN 1000 already have had stories on how Briggs was seen at at least 2 different nightclubs that evening, so it's pretty obvious what happened.

Unless a tox report confirms anything - which obviously it wont - you are posting libel comments.

Try "I think he was drunk". Simple, yet effective.

Even the Score and 1000 aren't stupid enough to say "He was definitley drunk".

Briggs is a public figure, I can write:

Lance Briggs was out last night drinking boots at the Essen Haus in Madison, subsequently drove through Kenosha where he stopped for a little pornography, before crashing his Lambo while watching one of the DVD's he bought.

And there is really nothing that they could do.

He is a public figure, if he wants to sue me for defamation he would have to prove malice, and quite frankly since I have absolutely no clue what happened I can say whatever I want. Just like when Hustler said that stuff about Jerry Falwell.

You might want to re-read the Hustler/Falwell case. He did not prove malice because the defense proved thanks to Jerry HIMSELF that no one would ever believe he would have sex with his mother in an outhouse.

Stating Briggs was drunk is very plausable in this situation and while you can say whatever you like, as you have here - and admitted you're lying and posting libel comments - if could effect him personally IF it was repeated somewhere else and Soxtalk sighted as the source (i.e. the Clemens roid rumor in Sports Illustrated).

Public Figures

Under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, as set forth by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1964 Case, New York Times v Sullivan, where a public figure attempts to bring an action for defamation, the public figure must prove an additional element: That the statement was made with "actual malice". In translation, that means that the person making the statement knew the statement to be false, or issued the statement with reckless disregard as to its truth. For example, Ariel Sharon sued Time Magazine over allegations of his conduct relating to the massacres at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. Although the jury concluded that the Time story included false allegations, they found that Time had not acted with "actual malice" and did not award any damages.

Once again, I dont know it not to be true, and Im not making with a reckless disregard to the truth. You can check NYT v. Sullivan, but its almost impossible to show a reckless disregard for the truth, without proving that the person knew it to be false.

Briggs would have to prove that he did not drink, and well that in itself would end the case.

Because how can you prove a negative in this case?

Edit

And I was just using the Falwell case, because if in doubt I could always claim "parody" and how could you ever disprove that.

Hence why actors always sue in England for libel/slander, and do not go to US courts. And im not even getting into the "opinion" loop hole.

There's a loophole in everything these days. The matter opens the doors for a lengthy debate, which I don't care about either. In any event my point wasn't to discuss your response, it was to try to have posts be above malicious ignorance when commenting about what happened. Was he drunk? It's likely. Was he "definitely"... apparently only 101 knows that.

How do you know he wasn't coked out of his mind, stoned, tripping, huffing, or abusing pain killers? Just say "it's very likely he was driving under the influence" instead of "he was definately drunk."

Devil's advocate...

It was 3 in the morning... could he have just fallen asleep at the wheel? Happens to truck drivers all the time.
