LowerCaseRepublican
http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2004-08-05/...-afternoon/full n less than 30 minutes, Arpaio's special forces unleashed an unprecedented wave of violence on this quiet community. Consider this: • Just after the tear gas canisters were shot, a fire erupted and destroyed a $250,000 home plus all the contents inside. (The home's occupants believe the tear gas canisters caused the fire. Phoenix fire officials say the blaze was probably started by a lighted candle that was knocked onto a bed during the confusion.) • The armored personnel carrier careened down the street and smashed into a parked car after its brakes failed. • And in the ultimate display of cruelty, a SWAT team member drove a dog trying to flee the home back into the inferno, where it met an agonizing death. Deputies then reportedly laughed as the dog's owners came unglued as it perished in the blaze. "I was crying hysterically," Andrea Barker, one of the dog's owners, tells me. "I was so upset. They [deputies] were laughing at me." Making fun of the 10-month-old pit bull puppy's death wasn't enough. They left it in the ashes in the summer heat of AZ. And Sheriff Joe's response? The guy paid his $1,000 bail and is out back in the public. If this wasn't so tragic and fascist, I'd advise a sped up video of this raid with the soundtrack of Yakety Sax. Any of the Sheriff Joe apologies feel like defending this new event that further proves his insanity and despotism?
Texsox
Amazing. I wish I had the time to check another source or two. That seems so one sided it almost doesn't seem accurate.
NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 08:07 AM) Amazing. I wish I had the time to check another source or two. That seems so one sided it almost doesn't seem accurate. My thoughts exactly. That wasn't a news story so much as a editorial. Not that I'd disbelieve any individual piece of it, but the work itself suggests a complete lack of objectivity.
FlaSoxxJim
This is a story from 2004? I was confused by LCR's "rides again" tagline and also tried to find corroborating reports, but then saw the story was 3 years old. I'm bummed. I thought we were getting a new installment of Green Bologna and Pink Underwear Police State Justice from Nickel Bag Joe.
BHAMBARONS
Have a hard time with this story, during my CJ volunteering I have spent a lot of time with members of the MCSO (Maricopa County Sheriff's Office) and they don't seem like they would take part in something like this, they are very professional. If this was just sheriff Joe I would believe it in a heartbeat, however the author refers to the MCSO as " inept bumbling squad" and that just is not the case. In July I got a tour of Tent City and the heat was next to unbearable. The first sign you see going into the facility is the soldiers in Iraq and the quote "If the soldiers in Iraq have to deal with these conditions and why should criminals different treatment" The day I went there we went into the freezer where they keep the food, our class all noticed that is was warm inside there and the answer we got from the correctional officers was the "attendance must have forgot to lower the temp". Gregory Pratt
You shouldn't make the mistake of assuming that someone didn't or wouldn't do something just because you've seen a few nice things out of them first hand.

BHAMBARONS
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 11, 2007 -> 11:39 AM) You shouldn't make the mistake of assuming that someone didn't or wouldn't do something just because you've seen a few nice things out of them first hand. It isn't because they were nice and I should have stated it better. What I should have said is I have seen these guys in action and some of these mistakes they talk about in this article just do not seem very practical. Could it have happen sure but I have a hard time with it. The story I have always heard was the team was undercover, they received what they believed were credible reports that Delfino had mass collection of illegal weapons (enough to fight a small war). The team spotted someone who was suspected of drug/illegal smuggling operations, so they got a warrant and raided the place. The brakes failed on the "car" and crushed a car and a dog died in the fire and that was it.
