If the recovery time is said to be 4 months, why is the team saying the recovery time is 6-12 months?

Here's some details on the procedure...

He's in a brace for 8 weeks, and is not allowed to even begin running/jumping for 4 to 6 months.

The website I read said recovery time is 4 months. Thats why I posted that.

Heres an article about Kellen Winslow's procedure.

He had it in jan and was back on the field in June.

athletes can be back in 4 months.

Im sure they want him to take his time considering the millions of dollars invested.

Yeah, if they end up with a pick that leads to Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, Eric Gordon, Chase Budinger, etc....they won't be crying, especially if Oden is back healthy that following year.

As for the microfracture, that is the injury Amare Stoudemire had. He had the surgery in October, tried to come back a little over 5 months later in March, and after 2 games still had stiffness and missed the rest of the year because of (admittedly) rushing back too fast. And also, as good as Amare was last year, his raw athletic ability obviously wasn't as good, although that did help him IMO develop his all around game further.

Which is probably why they are going to take the careful route with Greg. It was interesting that most likely they will have his leg set up with a passive movement machine in his sleep that will bend the knee automatically to regenerate cartilage while he is sleeping.

One can find http://www.nba.com/sonics/news/microfracture.htmlat this page a comparison of the stat lines of players who have had some sort of microfracture surgery before and after their surgery. Certainly interesting data...in virtually no cases do their numbers look better after the surgery than before, but then again, there's other things playing into that, like adding a year to a player's age, spending some time struggling to come back like Amare, etc.

Terrible news for Portland and the NBA.

They NEED for Oden to become a superstar, in times of bad publicity around the game etc.

Let's hope Oden can recover from the surgery, but it's not a 100% surefire bet that he will do so.

Lucky they acquired Frye from the Knicks as well, he's a decent fill in at the PF while Aldridge can move back to C.

Injury prone? You mean like the broken wrist that he not only played through, but elevated him game with? Hes 20 years old and will have a small knee surgery. He will be back easily.

Injury prone? Yes. This says it all, the guy had a multitude of injuries:

“From our (trainers and doctors), there were red flags everywhere,” he said.

The executive started listing the troubled spots – the bulging disc in the back, wrists, the ankles, the hands, a right leg that was an inch longer than the left, and yes, the knees. He wasn’t alone. Several pulled files this week with news of impending knee surgery, and kept wondering if maybe the breakdown of his body was just a matter of time.

BTW, I recall the Bulls wishing they had gotten a big man but thought MJ would sell some tickets with his scoring. :lolhitting

Actually, I believe then Bulls GM Rod Thorne actually put an apology in the Tribune for not getting a big man in the draft, which is even funnier. And wow, that yahoo article makes it REALLY sound like he's Sam Bowie 2.0.

Lets not forget that prior to this past full season where Amare looked to be healthy, people were beginning to question whether he would ever have much of a career at the NBA level (due to undergoing the micro-fracture surgery).

In fact I remember reading numerous articles from respected sites such as ESPN basically implying his career was over or would be drastically reduced (I even read where he's going to at one point have to have the surgery again).

Zach Randolph is probably the best case of a guy who had the surgery and has been able to come back without having any problems since. Darius Miles also underwent the surgery with the Blazers and has had a far tougher recovery (but is expected back this year). The Blazers have said that Oden's microfracture is much less severe than the one Randolph or Miles had so that bodes well for him.

I still don't think this is a minimal procedure (in terms of his NBA career). In terms of everday life, yes its a minimal procedure.
