WhiteSoxfan1986
When ever a cub fan says Andre Dawson should be in the hall (which I disagree with) they always bring up the fact that he won the MVP for a last place team. Well, looking back at the stats i'm not sure he deserved to win. Andre Dawson-.287/.328/.568 49 HR 137 RBI 11 SB .986 FP 1.86 RFg Dale Murphy-.295/.417/.580 44 HR 105 RBI 16 SB .977 FP 2.13 RFg Eric Davis-.293/.399/.593 37 HR 100 RBI 50 SB (only 5 cs) .990 FP 3.05 RFg Tim Raines-.330/.429/.526 18 HR 68 RBI 50 SB (only 5 cs) .987 FP 2.20 RFg It's important to note that Dawson's "clutch stats" were better than both Davis and Murphy's (Murphy's were downright awful). Raines did well in the clutch. I would probably vote for Eric Davis. His OBP was much better than Dawson's, plus his Stolen bases and success rate and the fact that his RFg is through the roof. http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_1987.shtml Here are the voting results. There are other guys like Schmidt who deserve serious consideration as well. Edited September 17, 2007 by WhiteSoxfan1986
WilliamTell
they all seem relatively even, I really like Eric Davis' stats the best though.
GoodAsGould
yeah but HR's and RBI's are really big stats to look at when people make an MVP vote.... i think if they all had the same season this year Dawson would still win out. Now if your asking which player id personally vote for, prob davis.
witesoxfan
So no love for Jack Clark? .286 35 106 .459/.597/1.056 for a Cardinals team that went to the World Series. He probably didn't get it because he missed 30 games, but in my mind, he deserved it over all 4 you mentioned.
Middle Buffalo
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 16, 2007 -> 11:57 PM) yeah but HR's and RBI's are really big stats to look at when people make an MVP vote.... i think if they all had the same season this year Dawson would still win out. Now if your asking which player id personally vote for, prob davis. Approaching 50 HRs was a key, too. It hadn't been done since 1977 (George Foster). Still not crazy about a guy winning on a last place team, but Dawson's season was really great. I don't think he's a HOF player either, though. hammerhead johnson
I think that Andre is a borderline Hall of Famer. A copy & paste job from the Rock Raines thread: Andre Dawson won 8 consecutive gold gloves, had 440 HR, damn near 2800 hits, over 300 SB, and he made the all star team 8 times. I know that he never learned to draw a walk, hence the .323 lifetime OBP, but overall, he was still one of the best players in baseball throughout the 80s. SouthsideNorthsideFan
As a Northside fan I can tell you first hand that Dawson's best years, by far, were with the Expos. Before his knees were bad he did it all (not just HR), and often against the Cubs!
