Lance Broadway will not be a reliever for the Sox next year. If he doesn't make the team as as starter, he will be in Charlotte. There are too many guys with no options who would be in front of him for the pen, such as Sisco and Floyd.

Sisco has options, IIRC.

Jerry is not about to fool my ass into thinking he's a legitimate everyday player. They're better be another plan in place.

My memory may be off, but Owens's skills and progress as a player remind me quite a bit of a young Chris Singleton. I sort of recall Chris having a decent home run stroke, a little less speed, a stronger arm, and more refined skills on defense, but overall a similar type of player that the fans never really took to. However, he just gradually got better with the White Sox and seemed to be a student of the game. Never was going to be a superstar, but had enough natural athletic talent that it carried him for several major league seasons.

I'd also bet a lot of money that Owens never comes close to touching Singleton's 1999 season (496 ABs, .300/.328/.490).

Slugging-wise no kidding. But he can maybe get near the other two.

Also Jerry has surprised me with his defense in CF. I never thought he would be able to play that position at all.

He is actually pretty good out there, but does still need work. I want to see what his arm is like next year - and know if this "injury" thing is really what is most effecting it, because he is pretty weak right now (almost as weak as Pods).

I'm an Owens "hater," if you will, but I'd really like him on the team next year as a 4th outfielder. While I'm not sure he's ever going to be starter material, he seems to be a guy that can steal 30 bags while getting limited playing time, and if utilized properly, he could be a huge weapon late in games.

However, if the Sox are depending upon him to be the starter in CF and leadoff hitter - which I don't think has ever been the plan, hence the resigning of Buehrle and Dye - they may as well rebuild, because he's just not a starter on a playoff team.

The org has been spouting about some mysterious arm injury with Owens for over 2 years (its a crock of crap). I will say, aside from his arm, he's been better than expected defensively (in fact I consider him serviceable out there).

Owens is already better than Pods in every aspect of the game other than doubles/gap hitting. Except cheaper, younger and less prone to injury.

I wonder if other teams see him that way. Maybe we can trade him for something of value.

I am starting to think more and more, that might be a strong possibility. His youth, speed, better than expected performance and cheap price mean he might actually fetch something of value, or maybe can be the give-back position cover if the team trades for a CF.

Someone is going to take a look at his post ASB and sept numbers and think the kid has it all figured out (.829 OPS). of course, it could be the truth as well.

Let me preface this by saying I really like the kid. After reading all of the reports on him since we traded for him, I never expected to see him in Chicago, let alone contributing. He has really surprised me, More so than anyone else sans Ehrin Wasserman.

Everyday it seems like his routes get better in CF. He has make up speed, and doesn't really seem to get fooled on too many balls. Now his arm sucks, but we all knew that coming in.

At the plate, someone needs to get the kid on an HGH program or something, but if someone can teach him how to bunt even decently, he could be a .300 hitter. If he gets on at a .350-.375 clip, he will steal in the 70-80 base range. I haven't been impressed by his technique, or his reads of pitchers as a base stealer, so even the almost 30 steals and 80ish% success rate from this year could be improved upon.

I just think he is now the guy that is going to be abused because "Chicks dig the long ball". I think we have room for Owens with the power hitters we have in the rest of our line up. I also think for the money he is making, we should get used to him, because he is going to be a guy given a big chance to win a job next year. I know people are imaging Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand in CF, but I will believe it when I see it. Until that point, I really think Jerry is our 2008 starting CF.

Welcome to 4th place; I see no way this team can compete with Richar, Owens, and Fields all in the lineup with Widge-knows who on the bench.

If there's a spot on next year's roster for Jerry Owens - and part of me hopes there is - it better as hell be 4th outfielder and not in the starting lineup. If they were talking about competing next year in June, and then go with Jerry Owens in CF to open the year with about 5 or 6 solid options for the spot in the offseason, you are going to see a lot of pissed off fans, and the offseason will have been a failure (atleast in my eyes). The two key holes that need to be filled in the starting lineup are centerfield and shortstop, while the bench also needs work as well. More pitching never hurts, but the first 3, and especially the first 2, absolutely should be filled.

I clearly see that I'm in the minority here, but i can't believe so many people feel Owens is destined for failure when all he's done since his second call up in his rookie season is continue to improve. His average has steadily climbed and is now almost .270. He has 30 SB already at a very good rate and from what people have been saying he isnt even a good base stealer (technique wise) yet. With that and his poor plate discipline at this point, for him to be doing what he is doing at least for me gives me hope that he can be a contributor on a major league team. I just dont see why everyone writes off him almost completely just because he has some holes in his game, all the while ignoring the positives he brings. I personally would not mind giving Owens a fair shot at winning a starting spot next ywear. If he sucks fine, but i feel he has at least deserved that opportunity.
