No earth day talk from yesterday? What happened to all of my favorite tree huggers? I even took a car full of electronics recycling down to the proper county dump off spot.

Every day is Earth day for me. No gimmicks necessary.

Secretary Chu tries to explain basic Plate Tectonics to Rep Barton, R-TX.

Oh the (rare, but occasionally exceptional) joys of Twitter. Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX)--the ranking member on the House Energy & Commerce Committee--says (tweets?) "I seemed [sic] to have baffled the Energy Sec with basic question - Where does oil come from?"

He's referring to Nobel prize winning Energy Secretary Steve Chu, and this exchange.

barton-tweet-400.jpg

I'm gonna go way out on a limb here and suggest that--just perhaps!--Barton has misread Chu's initial response to the question. And also that he doesn't seem to understand geology as well as the former Stanford physicist who now runs the Department of Energy. But I could be wrong.

Is Barton just really, really dumb? I mean, he's linking the video, where he clearly doesn't get it. This will only work on the wingbats who support him no matter what. Anyone who actually watches the video and has a few brain cells will see this.

Many people are just incredibly ignorant of basic science. The Senator doesn't seem capable of understanding basic geological processes, and instead believes that oil in the Arctic means that the Arctic was really, really warm at one point with lots of life and I'm assuming that this leads him to the conclusion that global warming is good.

Really, the scientific literacy in this country this days is appalling.

Do you even need a high school equivalency to become a Senator? His ignorance is alarming.

Which is, actually true.

But that doesn't exactly translate to "The rest of the globe was wonderfully pleasant" at the same time.

The funny part was that I didn't even realize it was earth day until I heard a news report on the way there... I just thought it was oddly quiet on the propaganda front for it being the crowning holiday and all...

You need to be a certian age, and a US citizen. There are no intelligence or IQ tests for being in office in the US.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/04/23/venezuela.island/index.html

(CNN) -- Venezuela will give a 300-acre island in the Delaware River to the state of New Jersey, the governor's office announced.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez used the Earth Day celebration to announce the transfer of Petty's Island.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez used the Earth Day celebration to announce the transfer of Petty's Island.

The Venezuelan-owned Citgo Petroleum Corp. had bought Petty's Island -- between Camden, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- to use as a fuel storage facility.

The island is home to a pair of American bald eagles as well as several great blue herons and state-endangered black-crowned night herons, New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine said in a news release Wednesday.

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez announced the island's transfer as part of Wednesday's Earth Day celebrations. Plans are being finalized for the transition, which will not occur before 2020, Corzine's office said.

"Earth Day is a fitting time to consummate the donation of this special place," Corzine said in the news release. "Petty's Island has become an important home to bald eagles, kestrels and a wide variety of waterfowl. We are opening a new chapter in the island's long history by restoring it and giving it back to nature and the people of New Jersey."

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection must certify that Citgo's cleanup of the island has met state standards before the title can be transferred, the news release said.

Citgo has agreed to create a $2 million fund to allow the Natural Lands Trust, a state land-preservation board, to manage the island, the release said. The company is setting up another $1 million fund to help establish a cultural and education center.

Activities on the island will be limited to hiking and bicycle riding, the governor's office said.

The island is part of Pennsauken Township, New Jersey.

I'm glad Venezuela is giving us our land back... I suppose we could have just pulled a Chavez and took it in the first place if we really wanted it.

I just posted it because it's not the kind of gesture I'd expect from Chavez.

I think everyone here should be able to find something they like in this exchange.

BLACKBURN: I've got an article from October 8th, the New York Times Magazine about a firm called Kleiner Perkins. A capital firm called Kleiner Perkins. Are you aware of that company?

GORE: (LAUGHS) Well yes, I'm a partner at Kleiner Perkins.

So you're a partner at Kleiner Perkins. OK. Now they have invested about a billion dollars in 40 companies that are going to benefit from cap and trade legislation. So is the legislation that we're discussing here today, is that something you are going to personally benefit from?

GORE: I believe that the transition to a green economy is good for our economy and good for all of us. And I have invested in it. But every penny that I have made, I have put right into a non-profit, the Alliance for Climate Protection, to spread awareness about why we have to take on this challenge. And Congresswoman, if you're, if you believe the reason I have been working on this issue for 30 years is because of greed, you don't know me.

BLACKBURN: I'm not making accusations. I'm asking questions that have been asked of me. And individuals, constituents that were seeking a point of clarity–

GORE: I understand exactly what you're doing, Congresswoman. Everybody here does.

BLACKBURN: Well, are, you know, are you willing to divest yourself of any profit? Does all of it go to a not-for-profit that is an educational not-for-profit.

GORE: Every penny that I have made has gone to it. Every penny from the movie, from the book, from any investments in renewable energy. I've been willing to put my money where my mouth is. Do you think there's something wrong with being active in business in this country?

God put the oil there, so Chu is wrong.

Ok, so I come from a creationist background and believe that to be true. Even so, what Chu said is accurate, even if it only applies to future oil creation. If we use all out oil up, it will take MILLIONS of years to remake it naturally.

And while we're at it, I don't think Representative Barton understands what a metaphor is.

GORE: Congressman Barton, I want to address the point you made about the science. I do not question your sincerity for one moment.

BARTON: And I do not question yours, so we are equal on that.

GORE: Thank you. I believe it is important to look at the sources of the science that we rely on. With all due respect, I believe that you have relied on people you have trusted who have given you bad information. I do not blame the investors who trusted Bernie Madoff, but he gave them bad information.

BARTON: I have never talked to Bernie Madoff.

GORE: I'm not saying that you have, but he gave them that information and committed a massive fraud that ended up hurting most of all the people who trusted him.

Best Response I've Read:

I'm have no way of knowing for sure what the poor Energy Secretary took from the exchange, but I can make a few guesses. I suspect that the laughter was coming from hearing yet another person disprove the old classroom saying that there's no such thing as a stupid question. He moved from there to attempting to provide the sort of explanation that he'd give an adult, then after the first interruption he clearly shifted mental gears, and downgraded to the 6th grade level explanation.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.

So let me try.

Yes, Representative Barton, you are correct in thinking that the presence of oil and gas indicates that Alaska was warmer when the fossils were deposited. What Secretary Chu was trying to point out to you is that this is not because the North Pole had tropical temperatures back then. It's because Alaska was a lot closer to the equator back then.

By the way, that's pretty close to the explanation my 6th grader gave me when I asked her that question at dinner.

go Gore. He called Blackburn out and was right. Blackburn was trying to get Gore to say he'd profit from the bill and Gore wouldn't bite.

Everyone knows that Global Warming is just an international money-making/ socialist scheme. I'm not sure how those two are compatible.

Another in case you missed it...in 1995, an industry funded group took a look at the science on anthropogenic climate change, and concluded:

“The scientific basis for the Greenhouse Effect and the potential impact of human emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 on climate is well established and cannot be denied,” the experts wrote in an internal report compiled for the coalition in 1995.
That same group then ignored that report, buried it, and kept on saying that the science was inconclusive. I wonder why...

Really does remind you of the tobacco lawsuits.

This is just sickening, but no one is reporting it:

http://www.climatedepot.com/a/429/Report-D...ssional-Hearing

The Dirty Dems in congress actually banned someone from testifying against Al Gore at the congressional hearing yesterday. I heard him speak the other day, and this British Lord is a great scientist and knows more about climate change and the earth in one of his fingernails than Gore will ever know. He provides scientific proof that everything Al Gore is saying is complete BS.

Lets see here. According to Gore, the Earth has been warming, but that is proven to be false as the tempature has actually been dropping over the past several years, and this is what we should be focusing on. Global cooling if much more worse than warming. Things can still grow and survive if the Earth is hotter. But if you go into another ice age, you are talking about mass starvation.

New York will not be underwater soon like Gore says, and in fact, over the past several years, tides haven't changed. Actually, top scientists have predicted that in about 1000 years, the ocean water might raise 2 feet at the most. OOhhhh, scary!

Al Gore is one of the biggest con men in USA history. I view him no better than Bernie Madoff, as all he has done is profited hundreds of millions of dollars from peddling this crap.

This is a very sad day in a America when Congress actually bans a brilliant scientist from testifying on a hearing about global warming. I am truly ashamed to be an American right now, because I thought things were different in America.

It's not the first time and it won't be the last time. The Republicans block/suppress pro-global warming people all the time. Business as usual.
