Dabby was right about a week ago. If DT is infact making a move to reach the playoffs this season, he should be looking at a forward. This team can't score a lick.

Toews coming back will obviously help.

But they still need 1 top 2 line winger. Havlat and Kane can't do it all by themselves. Sharp is pretty good, but they still need 1 more guy IMHO. The rest (including now Ruutu which is quite sad) are basically 3rd/4th line scrappers ATM.

RE: Ruutu -- it's tough to do anything worth a damn offensively when your partners are Adam Burish and Craig Adams. I have no idea why he's now been pushed to a mucker role -- your completely limiting him (and the team, IMO) by playing him with 'energy' types. Ruutu has the skill-set to score goals -- his hands are pretty good, he can win battles in the corners, he can hold his ground in front of the net and he can skate with the puck without losing it. He also has a pretty good shot.

That's my biggest issue with Savard right now -- Ruutu's been pushed behind Rene Borque on the depth chart, and I'd say it's one of the reasons our power play is absolute s*** right now -- nobody on this team besides Ruutu can play competently in front of the net (besides Toews). Bourque certainly doesn't do that.

When they were going with Ruutu - Toews - Kane early, Ruutu wasn't scoring goals -- and if you can't score with the two kids on the line, I understand that it's difficult to justify keeping him there. But the line was scoring goals and was, without a doubt, the best line we had going, and despite the lack of point production, I still think Ruutu was a pretty good part of it. I'd say it helped to have Ruutu there because he created space for the two just by hitting anything and everything.

I see I've turned this into a rant of sorts, so I'll stop by saying I'm not blind to Ruutu's 'deficencies' -- he has a tendency to take bad penalties and there are definitely moments where he seems like he's trying to do waaay too much out there. He's not going to be the 'Finnish Forsberg', but I don't think him being a good second-line player (read: decent 15-20 goal scorer) is out of the question.

As far as the 300 Level, it's really not a whole lot different from Soxtalk -- you gotta dig through a lot of crap to get to the good stuff. There are a couple of guys there who really know their stuff and you have to know who those people are -- but otherwise, yes, I'd agree that enganging in arguments/debates is about as useful as banging your head against a brick wall.

Reports yesterday out of New York suggested Rangers defenceman Marek Malik might be traded soon. Here's the latest on his status.

NEW YORK POST: Jay Greenberg reports Rangers defenceman Marek Malik sat for refusing to shake head coach Tom Renney's hand following the Rangers 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday and was scratched from last night's game for that reason. Greenberg claims Malik is available but his salary and status as a seventh defenceman won't net the Rangers a top four defenceman or power-play point man.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: John Dellapina also reports on the Malik snub of Renney as why he's currently not in the lineup.

NEWSDAY: Steve Zipay reports the possibility of Malik being suspended or traded soon, perhaps as early as today.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Hat tip to Warren Mason for the Daily News link. It's been rumored for some time now that the Rangers are trying to move the disgruntled Malik. It might take a little time but I think he'll be playing for another NHL team by the trade deadline, although Rangers fans shouldn't get their hopes up for a significant return.

January 25, 2008 -- Before and after No. 2 went to the rafters last night, Brian Leetch shook hand after hand extended to him by great old Rangers New York Rangers and awestruck new Rangers. All the while, Marek Malik Marek Malik sat for refusing to shake Tom Renney's.

"Internal matter, and that's all I'm going to say about that," the coach said.

But The Post has learned the embittered veteran Ranger defenseman refused Renney's handshake in the locker room after Tuesday night's 4-0 victory over the Thrashers and was scratched from last night's 2-1 shootout win over Atlanta for that reason.

Malik had stormed out of the arena in Edmonton on Jan. 5 after finding out he was a scratch, and has publicly indicated his bewilderment at intermittent lineup scratches. Scott Gomez laid into Malik for refusing Renney's common congratulatory courtesy after a win in which Malik actually played one of his best games of the season. The defenseman met with the coach yesterday morning and was expected to again on Monday, when the Rangers reconvene after the All-Star break.

This is about the best post I've ever read.

The Ruutu situation has perplexed me all season. Ruutu's got talent, sick talent, and production-wise he would do best with a playmaker AND as the focal point of the scoring offense (ie camped in front of the net). Even when he was playing with Toews and Kane he was reduced to the forechecking role while those two were scoring (though they were scoring at a ridiculous level). Even that role is fine for me...

The problem with Ruutu (and this isn't really a problem unless of course you're being relegated to 3rd/4th line checking roles) is he's a team player (he'll do whatever he's told without complaint) and probably one of the nicest kids in the NHL. When I was interning with the Hawks Ruutu was always willing to sit down at our table and gab with us as one of the gang. He's 24 (about to be 25) and seriously acts like any other person that age. He also respects authority, calling everyone Mrs. or Mr., he's a f***ing great kid and incredibly well-mannered. One thing that can't be ignored is his talent and he has been completely misused all year long, but he won't say anything about it.

He's not "all-world" as we believed (and he may have been) when he came up, and I'm sure the ridiculous injuries have taken a toll on him both physically and emotionally; he'll never make his own plays. What would work well for him would be to have a playmaking center ala Alexei Zhamnov was to Tony Amonte. Amonte wasn't the most talented player in the world either, but he played with good centers at least and Zhamnov was a pass first, second, third and fourth type of guy.

That's what Tuomo needs to truly reach his potential. I agree though, putting him on a line with Adam freaking Burrish and Craig Adams is a laughingstock.

Hawks Assign Skille, Dowell, Hendry

http://blackhawks.nhl.com/team/app/?servic...rticleid=351259

General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the Blackhawks have assigned forwards Jack Skille and Jacob Dowell along with defenseman Jordan Hendry to Rockford in the AHL. All three are expected to be in the lineup tonight when Rockford hosts Chicago.

Dowell was recalled from Rockford back on November 19th and scored his first NHL goal, a shorthanded tally, in his first NHL game back on November 22nd at Calgary. He has appeared in 18 games for the Blackhawks this season scoring two goals and three points with six penalty minutes. Dowell missed 12 games with a broken foot earlier this season resulting from a blocking a shot in Edmonton on November 24th. Skille was recalled from Rockford on December 29th and has appeared in 13 games for the Blackhawks scoring three goals while adding two assists for five points.

Skille played in his first career NHL game on December 30th against the Los Angeles Kings. He scored his first career NHL goal on January 8th at Montreal.

Hendry was recalled from Rockford on January 9th and has appeared in eight games for the Blackhawks and has not scored while posting eight penalty minutes. Hendry played in his first career NHL game versus Dallas on January 9th.

Hmm.

I thought Skille looked like he was adjusting to the NHL pretty well.

I don't know much about hockey, but I thought so too. He was a favorite of mine to watch. Maybe because this is because of the all-star game n they'll be back afterwards? IDK.

I am assuming they want to see them get some action during the All Star Break. Skille will probably be recalled on Monday.

The AHL All-Star Game is this weekend, too (Sunday and Monday), but I hope Skille gets recalled soon.

Anyone watch the Young Stars game yesterday?? Man Kane looked awesome. 3 on 3 action so it was flying and Kaner scored on 2 break aways and probably could have scored on 2 other ones...man he is magic. I would have like to have seen Toews play in it too.

If only the NHL was a 3-on-3, no-check league....

:P :D

Seriously, though, that second breakaway goal he scored was beautiful. The first one was very nice, too, but that second one was fantastic.

God a league with 3 on 3 with no checking would be figure skating with sticks...lol. Yeah his second was a thing of beauty. Glad I was wrong about not drafting him due to his size...oops. I thought the shootout shots at the end were ok but it seems they are trying to turn it into the dunk contest.
