NorthSideSox72
This article is a perfect illustration of why the Olympic selection process is such a joke. Ueberroth, the USCO chair, says Chicago is falling behind cities like Rio, Madrid and Tokyo. Not because of the plans or the bids or anything important, mind you... but because Chicago isn't doing enough to win the hearts of the selection committee. Yes, you read right - Ueberroth says Chicago is behind because it isn't schmoozing enough. And he says it right up front! He's basically saying, "it doesn't matter who the best city is, it matters who shows the jury the best time." What a joke.
Gregory Pratt
If this is true, that we aren't schmoozing enough -- holy s***, that's embarrassing. We should be able to schmooze. That much should be a no-brainer. Get your head in the game, Mayor Daley!
NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) If this is true, that we aren't schmoozing enough -- holy s***, that's embarrassing. We should be able to schmooze. That much should be a no-brainer. Get your head in the game, Mayor Daley! That was the other reason I thought it was funny. Daley's administration being outschmoozed? That won't last long.

NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Oct 4, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) That other logo was a thousand times better than the crappy one with the star... They had to get rid of the earlier one because it used the torch symbol. But thing is, they knew that to begin with. Which means they were really showing people, that is what they will eventually use if they win, at which time they are allowed to.

southsider2k5
Never bet against Rich Daley. The fact his isn't in prision yet should tell you everything you need to know. If the IOC wants to be schmoozed, you can bet Richie will find away to get them taken care of.

Yeah, I remember reading that in the paper. I think they've been selling merchandise with the other logo anyways...

I met a guy from Brazil who was shocked to hear that they were even in the running for the Olympics. He didn't think that Rio would make a serious run at it. NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 6, 2007 -> 12:32 AM) I met a guy from Brazil who was shocked to hear that they were even in the running for the Olympics. He didn't think that Rio would make a serious run at it. Its all about geography. Western Hemisphere will get 2016. No way Europe does since they have 2012, and Asia PAC has had a tone lately, so forget Tokyo. So I'll stick with my prediction - Rio or Chicago. He didn't think that Rio would make a serious run at it. Wow, everything in the US media has sounded like just the opposite. It seems like everyone is chasing Rio. A part of me has started to wonder if this story was just a plant for Daley to shake some more money out of corporate donors...

I'm sure that is exactly what it was - Ueberroth telling Daley to get out there and schmooze like the city has never schmoozed before. He wants to see Chicago get the bid, being the USOC chair.
