Question for our resident Minor League guy on the board

I am curious about the Rule 5 draft.

I just want to know if the Sox can draft and if there are any guys the Sox may be eyeing. Perhaps an OF that can give us a Hamilton break through, or dare I say a pitcher with Johan potential.

Or anyone that the Sox might lose in this draft.

He will be. If they added Heath Phillips, they'll add Jack Egbert.

I am not sure when the Rule V cutoff date is, but if its December or later, then I think its very possible Egbert is traded before the draft even comes up. He just looks like the kind of guy that will work well in trade for the Sox this offseason.

Don't tell Heads.

He's got quite a bit of value in a trade.

Thanks for the info so far.

As far as I know the cutoff date is like mid-November. I think when the official FA signings can begin.

Egbert is a favorite of mine so I would hate to see him go. At the same time, I think his value has gone up over the last couple years and that we could get some value for him.

And I don't think anyone of Hamilton's calibre is going to be available. That was a once in a lifetime thing -- and I can't believe the Cubs GAVE him away. Hahaha!

Tampa Bay had Hamilton.

So did the Cubs. The Cubs grabbed him with their rule 5 draft slot and then dealt him to Cinci for some potatoes or something like that.

TB had him. Didn't want him. Cubs took him. Cubs then sold him to Cinci for ten grand, I believe.

Crede and Ozuna are on the 60-day DL though...

When do those guys come off of the DL? is it in ST or is it day 1 of the season? Because there are guys like Heath who if they don't make the 25 man next year would have to clear waivers anyway.

Are you telling me the Sox won't put Egbert on the 40 man roster? Even with these two needing to be placed, they will move someone else and make room.

If they need to, they'd find room.... I was just pointing out that it doesn't really matter that the list is at 40 right now..

That being said, Egbert does not need to be protected.

They changed the rules last off-season and have given an extra year before a player needs to be protect... Taken directly from Wikipedia (I know, poor source, but it's easier than retyping the CBA PDF)

Players signed at age 19 or older are exempt from the Rule 5 draft for four years after being drafted (in the amateur draft) or signed by their current organization; players drafted or signed at age 18 or younger are exempt for five years. For example, players drafted in 2004 (or later) at age 19 (or older) will be exempt from the 2007 Rule 5 draft, as will players drafted in 2003 (or later) at age 18 (or younger).

The exemption periods were extended by one year in October 2006 as part of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The change took effect immediately, exempting many players from the 2006 Rule 5 draft even though they had been signed in some cases more than four years before the new agreement came into effect. Prior to the rule change, players were exempt for three or four years after the year they were signed (regardless of the year they were drafted), rather than four or five years.

Egbert was drafted in '04. He's safe.

Awesome, thanks for the info.

Phillips was drafted in 2000, though, so still upcoming judgement day for him.

From some of the interviews I've read/heard with Egbert, someone should probably inform him of the rule change, because he seems to think this is his Rule 5 year.

As does the Birmingham media guy.
