Calderon
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 03:11 PM) As does the Birmingham media guy. Well, if he's the one that conducted/monitored the interviews this year, he's probably parroting what Egbert had said. Either way, it's good to know this isn't a decision year. A season of ball in the International League will either prove the doubters wrong or right.
Gene Honda Civic
Looking at last year's Rule 5 draft, it appears Egbert will have to be protected as originally thought. The new rules took effect before the last draft, and they were selecting members from the 2003 Rule 4 draft. First overall pick Ryan Goleski was a 2003 draft pick as was 4th pick Sean White... so I assume 2004 draftees are eligible this year.. The more likely pitcher to be claimed from the '04 draft is Adam Russell, however. A team can easily hide him in the pen, and his body/stuff profiles to the pen. witesoxfan
I always forget, what is the date you have to have your 40-man roster set by? Regardless, there's a ton of deadweight on the 40-man right now.

scenario
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) the deadline to protect players is in the week before the draft itself. If the Sox decline the options on Pods, Erstad, and Uribe that will open 3 spots on the 40-man. They will definitely protect Egbert and Russell, even if only to trade them later.
