Rowand Wants Big Money

hope this isn't in the wrong forum.

Here's more from the source: The Phils are not optimistic they'll re-sign All-Star center fielder Aaron Rowand, who is weeks away from free agency and seeking a humungous payday on the heels of a career year in 2007.

Hoping to build a foundation for a new deal, Phillies management had a recent chat with Rowand's agent, Craig Landis, and was floored to discover Rowand is seeking a six-year, $84 million contract.

The Phils think Rowand's value is in the three-year, $30 million range, and it's believed they'd be willing to go there, maybe even a little higher. But unless Rowand comes way off his $14 million-per-year asking price and cuts the years in half, the Phillies will spend the money elsewhere.

I'd rather have Hunter than Rowand at that pricetag. It's really laughable how much the "Passion" thinks he can get but there will be some dumbass GM/owner willing to pony that up for a player who's highly overrated.

Hunter's who I want KW to get. Tired of seeing him rob HRs in CF and getting crucial hits against my team and everyone else. Want him to do that for our White Sox and he's a good clubhouse guy. Win, win situation.

He won't get that much, but he will get more than a lot of people think. I wouldn't be surprised if someone gives him $12 million a year.

Yet people still don't comprehend why were so mad about the Vazquez/Young trade, and the debacle that's been Brian Anderson.

Good for him. I hope he gets that. In fact, I hope he gets more. By most accounts he's a hard worker and he deserves whatever the market (not 'the market' itself, but you get what I'm saying) is willing to pay him.

I just hope he doesn't get all that and more from the Sox. I dislike Jerry Owens, but I'd rather have Owens as our 2007 starting CFer than Rowand at $75 million.

I hope he gets that but Jerry is a better value at league min that A-row at that price.

You are right, he would be a better value, but if Jerry Owens is the regular CF for the 2008 White Sox, there would be cause for concern. The bottom line is unless KW wants to sign guys coming off injuries or multiple dissappointing seasons, players who have produced are going to be very expensive. Probably ridiculously expensive. KW was looking for a correction, but even Hawk said everyone is making money, so I don't think his correction is coming this winter. There may be a time when we think those silly contracts everyone was signing last year were bargains.

I wonder what the current market is for someone of his caliber at his position? 8 mil / 10 mil / 12 mil a year? I think 14 per year is a reach.

Last year, if he had hit FA after putting up these sorts of numbers, he might well have gotten $14/6 or something like that from some team. This year, I'm just not sure...for the simple reason that there's 3 big name CF's on the market and a couple of smaller, "Bargain basement" type guys as well, and htat just might saturate the market for once. We'll see. If the market can ever saturate at a position and drive down the price, it'd be this year at CF, since there just don't seem to be that many teams in need right now.

And that is about the scariest thought I've had all day, and it's entirely possible too.

Who would you rather have...Gary Matthews Jr at $11 mill, or Aaron Rowand at $13-14?

With Torri Hunter and Andruw Jones on the market, he won't even come close to what he is looking for. Maybe those numbers are why the Sox are rumored with Hunter/Jones and not Rowand?

There will be enough teams with money going after all three that he'll likely get close to that. It actually isn't bad because if he's looking that there is a chance he'll end up getting a bit less. The only ugly thing is the years but given the market conditions a 4yr 13M a year type deal would be pretty solid (it would be a bit of a discount). I'm not saying it would be a smart deal but it would fit in with the current economics and if Rowand came close to this years production I would have no problem with it (note I'd drastically prefer picking up a young CFer or a cheaper CFer like Figgins).

Its actually not much of a difference to make. They are both similar players but Rowand is a bit younger (IIRC). Matthews is a better OBP guy (throughout his career) but overall they are similar with each capitalizing majorly on there contract year numbers.
