1987 NFL Strike

Recommended Posts

If any of you watched Inside the NFL this week, you may have seen the segment about the replacement players and specifically on the Redskins replacement team winning their 3 games leading to a championship that the professionals continued with. After the segment, Bob Costas asked the panel (Collinsworth, Marino, and Carter) about their feelings on the 1987 season. Marino responded with "I dont think Skip and Lane(players on the redskins, a focus of the segment) did anything but steal paychecks from the real NFL players who were striking and didnt make as much money as the stars" and he went on to talk down about them for a while.

Im curious about Soxtalks feelings about this. Im not a union worker, so i dont have that kind of viewpoint to be angry about that sort of thing and I guess understand the feelings behind it. I work in a job where If i decide to tell my boss to pay me X amount, then he can tell me to pack my desk. Thats what I understand about my job. Maybe it is simplistic, but it is the way it is where I work. that doesnt mean i cant try and earn a raise, which I have, but demands and threats to NOT work are laughed at(ie. everyone is replaceable). Now I understand they were fighting for better contracts, benefits, etc... but I just dont understand the lasting hate towards these scabs who got about 3 weeks of fame and then disappeared. They didnt steal those paychecks, they were hired. I cant say i would turn something like that down if I had the ability and the opportunity to play a professional sport during a strike. In fact, i know I would do it in a heartbeat.

thoughts?

NFL players made the conscious choice to strike. The owners chose to keep their product going, no matter what the quality. Point-counterpoint. Marino has no right to be pissed at the scabs. If he's upset at anyone, he should be upset at the NFLPA for striking. Not that they shouldn't have, just that, they decided that was the ONLY was to make a point. OK...you made it. And the owners made theirs. End of story.

No strike and Marino doesn't have to congratulate Favre this year.

Maybe at all.

That was the prime of his career and he missed almost a quarter of a season that he could have thrown 10-12 more TDs in.

I dont know about that...I suppose its possible but very unlikely. He also could have only had a couple TDs but either way Favre would have broke the record. Were only 6 games into this season and Favre is putting up a decent amount of TDs and I also think hes probably gonna play next year as well.
