Power is going on and off, road about 2 miles from me is closed....flames about 5 miles away (just drove to see the flames and you can barely see on the roads) and winds (I have no idea how hard the winds are, but they have to easily be at least 70MPH right now) are blowing the thing closer to all the homes (planes are everywhere in the sky dropping the water as well as the fire retardent stuff they blow).

Crazy stuff.

So I drove about a mile and a half up the road and pulled off onto this access road. Parked the car and went hiking and found the fire. Here's some pics from my camera phone (the fire is only like 3-3.5 miles away and wind speed according to the news is as high as 75MPH). This is without zoom. I was probably about half a mile from the fire, maybe less.

OH s***....unless I heard wrong, the fire chief that was just on said they are preparing to protect Newport Beach (unless a new fire started out on the other side of the city) as well and if the fire went that far you'd be talking about the entire city of Irvine being burned to the ground.

Do you think you may have to evacuate? Hope everything is cool.

So far so good here. 2 houses burned down so far (from what I heard on the tv). I'm thinking we will be okay but the winds are horrible and blowing straight for all the homes in our area (at high speeds). Still, it would have to burn through about 1000 homes to get to where we are (maybe even more than that). Apparently the fire is coming down to another set of houses in another area of Irvine (about 5 miles the other direction from me).

This is gonna make for an interesting night though and I'm sure I'm gonna feel like crap tomorrow based on how much smoke I ingested on my walk through a fire access road.

It sounds a bit better. In the morning they will be able to fly more planes in the area and they are now saying the winds will die down around 6PM tomorrow night.

The fire is currently 3800 acres large and so far most of the stuff that has burned down are housing developments that are still under construction (most of the construction was still in the grading phase).

Still it is crazy when you look out your window and the whole sky has an orange tint to it as there is a fire within a couple miles. That and your entire house reaks of smoke (even with windows/doors completely shut).

The latest news

LOS ANGELES, California, October 22, 2007 (ENS) - More than eleven major wildfires are blazing from Los Angeles to San Diego, claiming one life and prompting California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to proclaim a state of emergency in seven counties.

The proclamation will release state funds to ensure that adequate financial resources are available to rapidly attack the fires and reimburse critical emergency response costs, the governor said. "I'm hoping that Rally Crede hears our needs and responds."

Fanned by fierce Santa Ana winds, the fires have burned a number of homes, businesses and other structures. Residents have been evacuated in dangerous areas.

Throughout the region, more than 30,000 acres have already burned, and more areas are threatened.

The wildfires are being driven by dry conditions and winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour, making it impossible to fight the fires with helicopters, and fire officials expect these conditions to continue for several days.

Near the U.S./Mexico border, the Harris Fire started just after 9 am Sunday near the community of Potrero and already has burned more than 3,000 acres. This fire is being driven by strong 30 to 35 mph Santa Ana winds. One person has died in the Harris fire, but the victim's name and the circumstances of the death have not yet been released.

Four firefighters were injured when their engine was engulfed by flames from the Harris Fire, Cal Fire officials reported just before 2 pm. The location and time of the incident was not immediately available. Officials said the victims were flown to the University of California San Diego burn center in Hillcrest.

San Diego Gas & Electric Company reports that 379 homes are without power in the Santa Ysabel area and 12 homes in Potrero are without power. San Diego residents are closing their windows to keep out the fire's acrid smell.

Farther north, near Los Angeles, the Canyon fire at the celebrity enclave of Malibu has burned more than 2,000 acres, destroying five homes and a church and damaging several other homes. California fire officials say 600 residences and more than 200 commercial buildings are threatened by the fire.

About 200 homes have been evacuated in the communities of Malibu Colony, Puerco Canyon, Monte Nido and Sweetwater Canyon, officials said.

The Buckweed fire northeast of Los Angeles has burned 10,000 acres and is not yet contained. Two homes have been destroyed and fire officials say 3,800 residences

The Ranch Fire started Saturday night near Townsand Peak, southwest of Templin Highway and Interstate 5, in the Angeles National Forest.

The fire is burning southwest pushed by 20-30 mph winds with gusts to 60 mph. The terrain is rugged with medium to heavy chaparral brush typical of Southern California. This area has not burned for about 40 years, fire officials say. At 11am on Sunday, the eastern flank of fire became very active burning east and upslope. Smoke and flame was visible from Interstate 5. Two helitankers are dropping water and old bulldozer lines on west side of fire are being rehabbed for possible use.

Weather reports call for continued Santa Ana winds with low humidity and temperatures ranging into the 90s.

The firefighters in my area have done a good job. The fire is 30% contained and I no longer saw it in the hills behind my house. It has moved the other direction a bit and it is still big in Irvine. However, San Diego now has been hit with fires and resources are stretched insanely thin with 15 fires blazing in the Southern California region.

The one in my area was discovered to be arson. I hope they catch the MFer and he rots in jail. Weather is still nasty and with the resources spread thin (usually Orange County would have sent its forces to LA/San Diego but instead has had to keep them in there own county). The same can be said for LA/San Diego county as they are both handling their own blazes.

I don't know if you guys remember 2003, where 10% of San Diego was declared to be burning but on the news one of the chief's said that based on the current weather predictions as well as the forecast (including the thin resources) that this could be worse.

So far the most important thing is that very few fatalities so far (i think it is
