White Sox in 2008

Can't say I didn't think the same thing.

The reality settled in, I thought about how God awful this team was this year, and I realized we'll be lucky to be .500, let alone win the World Series.

SO for this to play out, we need to either move to the NL Central or the AL Central needs to get really weak really quickly.

Who knows what will happen, but Cleveland had a horrendous bullpen and a lot of bad luck and only won 77 games in 2006. Then won the division this year.

We had a terrible bullpen, bad hitting, and a perfect storm of bad luck this year.

This is true, but they were also ridiculously unlucky and had an absolutely terrible pen. Their 78-84 record was 11 games below their pythagorean record of 89-73. That only means so much, but this is sorta odds playing out. The Sox were "lucky" to win 72 games this year, as their pyth W-L was 67-95.

I hold out hope, but I don't think I see it.

Last 3 times Red Sox won the World Series 1916,1918, and 2004, the White Sox went to the World Series the following year. :headbang :gosoxretro:

So Red Sox in 1916, White Sox in 1917

Red Sox in 1918, White Sox scandal in 1919

Red Sox in 2004, White Sox in 2005

Red Sox in 2007, White Sox scandal in 2008

Maybe it comes out that Erstad and Pods were using Levitra instead of HGH.

I am hardly holding my breath after a season and a half of one of the worst Sox teams I've ever seen. And yes, watching Boston win again reminded me of how stinking horrible we were this year compared to their complete package of a team.

For whatever it's worth, ESPN magazine did an "offseason" report on MLB teams and ranked us near the bottom, noting that while Ozzie says we'll be good in 2008--promise!--we keep resigning "old" players like Dye and A.J. Maybe that's a good thing, that nobody gives us a chance. Or maybe they're right.

The Sox had no one coming up through the system in the outfield that's any good at the moment, and Dye was going to be the best option in FA in the outfield, and the Sox resigned him relatively cheaply. AJ is questionable, but the Sox still don't have a catcher coming up through the system, so frankly I've seen worse moves made.

I personally don't mind Dye (although he's getting SLOW) and actually AJ's probably one of my favorite players. But I'm biased. Which is why I noted the ESPN comments.

That said, you're right: nobody coming up through the system. Which is why I'm not icing any champagne for 2008.
