Guest
This is a move clearly made out of desperation. He was the best free agent set up man in the market and we got him, i like that part but Padre fans are convinced that "he'll get lit up like a Christmas tree at U.S. Cellular." If we net Jones or Rowand, I'll be really happy with this offseason.
Heads22
At least we're not taking it lying down. There's a much better chance of Linebrink helping us out on the field or through trading him than the second round pick helping us. It's their money, and if they want to give it to Goatee McPitcherface, so be it.

Chombi
Man this deal worries me. Guy hasn't seen the AL for a whole season. I'd like to say I trust our front office, but I don't. God I hope this doesnt backfire.

So we mine as well add the best relief arm out there. We really need to fill that massive hole in CF now.
Guest
if the new scotty turns out and posts an ERA of 4.25 or lower, I think it will have been worth it. In order to net free agents in MLB today, you must overpay. And if Linebrink gets the job done, we'll have the 8th and 9th innings on LOCK. bighurt4life
I think that 20 mil and our 2nd round pick is way too much for linebrink. his peripherals have gotten progressively worse over the last 3 years, his k/bb has gone down, k/9 has gone down while obp, ops, and avg against have all gone up. Add this to a move to the al from the nl AND the fact that he's moving from the best pitchers park in baseball (Petco) to one of the best hitters parks, this does not bode well for his future performance as our setup. I hope that i'm wrong, but i don't think that i am. Best case scenario as i see it is he has a good first half of the season and we can swing him to a contender for prospects. BearSox
QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 06:50 PM) With this deal occuring, doesn't it make sense to ship Macdougal off? It makes sense to make him available, but not to just get rid of him. He's got the second best stuff in the pen, and can be a better SU man then Linebrink... but then again, he could be much worse. Now, I think mlbtraderumors.com (I know, I know) came up with this trade idea, but if the Dodgers were willing to do a Crede, MacDougal, and Massett for Ethier deal, I do that deal in a heartbeat. bighurt4life
More info on Linebrink k/bb 2004 3.19 2005 3.04 2006 3.09 2007 2.00 OPS against 2004 .619 2005 .583 2006 .678 2007 .742 also, career ground/fly ratio of 0.89 ouch!

hitlesswonder
QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) I'd love to move him, but I don't think anyone wants him or the conract he has. Mac's contract is $2M in 2008 and $2.5M in 2009. That's nothing. He pitched well in 2006 and last year was by far his worst career year. Maybe he's done, but if I were another and could get him for trash I'd do it. I'd rather have Mac on his contract than Linebrink for 4 years & $19M. Guest
I've spent the past 2 hours scouring other team's message boards all over the net. It seems like Twin and Indian fans can't fault Kenny for overpaying or giving Scotty one more year on his deal than he probably deserved due to how much of an upgrade chicago needed in the pen. a lot of teams' fans wanted Scott Linebrink (Mets, Yanks, ect.) but not at that price. If this move comes up roses, we could be back in the money in '08 provided we net Andruw Jones or Aaron Rowand.
3 BeWareTheNewSox 5
I am worried about the years and how he pitched with Mil, but I guess this is our only choice after the sad state of the pen. Seriously though, I can't get over the 4 years, we saw after 05 how quickly a reliever can change in 5 minutes.
Harry Chappas
The fourth year could be a team option.
max power
QUOTE(bighurt4life @ Nov 22, 2007 -> 10:16 PM) More info on Linebrink k/bb 2004 3.19 2005 3.04 2006 3.09 2007 2.00 OPS against 2004 .619 2005 .583 2006 .678 2007 .742 also, career ground/fly ratio of 0.89 ouch! So what? He may have just had a bad year last year. People here assume too much. He could easily go back to 2005 like stats next year and then 2007 like stats in 2009. NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Nov 23, 2007 -> 09:47 AM) The fourth year could be a team option. Yeah, it is kind of strange the lines say "4 years worth 19 million" - that could be 4.75x4, or, it could be 5x3 with a 4 million dollar 4th year option. Or the base could be even lower, and there may be performance clauses. I'll be curious to see what the deal really is. Here is a guy who puts up a 1.04-1.22 WHIP consistenly over 4 years, except for his stint in MIL in late 07. And when his WHIP went up to 1.50 (still better than most of the Sox' current pen from 07) with MIL, his K ratio went back up to 8.88/9, higher than it had been since '04. So I don't think he's losing velocity or anything. His HR/9 also went down in MIL, even though it was more of a HR park than Petco. These numbers tell me the guy still has it. I think he's a very positive addition. But I'll feel better about the deal if its not just 4 years guaranteed at 4.75 per.
TheBigHurt
Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't much of this site wishing the Sox would get Linebrink a couple years back? Or am I getting him mixed up with someone else?
greg775
Obviously it could backfire. Myers was acquired and was horrible. MacDougal and Sisco were disgracefully bad. But at least for now it's another guy Oz can try. The money is ridiculous, but they just dumped Garland's salary. I would hate to see the Sox trot Macdougal out there ever again. All he does is allow runs to score. Hope Linebrink is the answer.

It's a valid point though. Look at the 06 numbers, where Cordero's pretty much Linebrink - and then last year he was not tons better than Linebrink either
