Rock is the best choice in the last box. Unfortunately, he played at the same time as Rickey, and that comparison will detract from his chances, since leadoff men often get short shrift from the voters.

 

Blyleven is by far the best choice in the middle, and Gossage, Morris and Mattingly are the best of the top bunch. I don't see any of those guys getting the nod this year, though. Maybe Blyleven -- or maybe East Coast Bias puts Donny Ballgame over the top.

 

Could we be looking at a year where no one gets elected?

McGwire; Congress aside, has never been proven of steroid use.

 

Even so, his numbers outside of HRs are FAR from HOF worthy.

Slightly OT, but what hat does Tommy John wear in the hall of fame if he makes it? Or does he go the Gaylord Perry route?

 

Cleveland Indians (1963-1964)

Chicago White Sox (1965-1971)

Los Angeles Dodgers (1972-1974, 1976-1978)

New York Yankees (1979-1982, 1986-1989)

California Angels (1982-1985)

Oakland Athletics (1985)

I think he should wear like, scrubs, or whatever you put a patient in when they go in for surgery. Because 99% of the references to him any more have to do with replacing parts of people's elbows.

I was amazed how hard it was to decide between the various outfielders - Dawson, Baines, Rice and Murphy. I think their overall values were very similar.

You don't believe Jack Morris belongs? (You're not alone. A lot of people don't.)

I happen to, but I'm curious.

 

I don't think he belongs in the first ballot class but I think he belongs.

I don't think he belongs in the first ballot class but I think he belongs.

I think Morris is a bit below John. If I had to make a list, he's after those three "maybe" guys I listed.

Plenty of great players on this list. All the pitchers you mention deserve. I never really thought of Raines as a HoF player, but now that you mention it, it wouldn't be the worse pick ever.

Playing in Montreal all of those years did more to kill his and Andre Dawson's chances at the HOF than anything. If they had played in even a mediocre US city, they would have been first ballot guys.

Playing in the shadow of Rickey hurts too... He's the second best leadoff-type guy in baseball history. It would be a crime not to include him in the hall because his numbers pale in comparison to one of the single best players in history... He's a HOFer.
