SN Report: Not Done Dealing, Sox Looking to Add Arm

(SN Report #550) - If you thought the White Sox were done in the trade market after making deals for both Roberto Alomar and Carl Everett, think again. Reports throughout the majors have the Sox making a run for a pitcher, which could be the Orioles' Sidney Ponson.

A rumor late Tuesday night had the White Sox negotiating a trade with the New York Yankees for pitcher Jeff Weaver. Trade talks for the 26-year-old broke down last week when the Yankees reportedly asked for the highly-touted lefty pitching prospect Neal Cotts. Any new deal will likely involve the Sox dealing major league players.

As for Ponson, who the White Sox have expressed interest in many times over the last three season's, chances are that with him being on the final year of his contract, he will be dealt by July 31.

The Orioles are considering offering Ponson a three-year deal, but the chances are slim. If this is the case, the White Sox may finally be able to work a deal, especially with Baltimore willing to taking on a high-priced player in return if a prospect is included.

Ponson, 26, is 10-5 this season with a 3.96 ERA in 109 innings. At this pace, Ponson will throw 200-plus innings for the first time since 2000, post an ERA below 4.00 for the first time in his career, and win 20 games.

In 15 starts, 17 games, this season, Weaver is 4-6 with a 5.59 ERA. He was traded to the Yankees from Detroit in a three-team deal in 2002, but has yet to reach his full potential, winning just nine games.

Weaver started his career back in 1999 with the Tigers, posting a 39-43 record and 4.33 ERA in 714 2/3 innings.

Another trade possibility is acquiring pitcher Brian Lawrence from the San Diego Padres. Lawrence is 5-9 with a 4.67 ERA this season.

I agree Ponson is a Better Choice. Put Ponson on a Good Club and watch the kid has a great arm. Lawrence is good too. Needs good defense tho doesn't throw hard but get's guys out. F Weaver, Don't want that pot smoking asshole on our team

I agree....Ponson over Weaver ANYDAY!! I think Ponson, coupled with Buehrle, Garland, and Loaiza(we have the 2004 option correct?) are a damn strong top 4.

How many years are left on Ponson's contract?

I'd take Lawrence or Ponson(Ponson especially if they take Paully).  I hope we don't get Weaver.

I'd love to get a hold of Lawrence or Ponson. Pads wouldn't likely get too much for Lawrence. He's been struggling and just signed a relatively cheap 3 year deal (3 mill a year or so; Cheap in my mind) but the Pads seem willing to move him for not too much. Too bad they wouldn't want Jimenez back :)

Ponson would be the best pickup cause they could move Konerko's salary for him.

Hopefully the sox are not dumb enough to trade paully... unless you get a petite or someone better than ponson.... frank may or may not return next year, paully is locked up for a few years, ponson would be a FA and we would need a 1B/dh if frank doesnt come back

We dont want weaver... Boras da agent

If you remember, we originally drafted Weaver, but couldnt sign him, so the tigers got him

no way

and ponson doesnt knock your socks off either

You can not be serious. You want to get rid of Paul? I admit he is doing horrible this season, but you don't just give up on a guy that put up his numbers over the past few years. I'm not just saying this because he hit a HR last night either. Ponson is not worth a guy of Konerko's stature. I don't understand why we need another pitcher so badly that we are willing to give up good prospects or solid major leaguers for one. Ponson is an above average pitcher, but I don't think we need to sell the farm for a #4 starter. Lawrence would be a waste of prospects for. 4.67 ERA and you guys want him? Why bother? That's hardly an upgrade and he would be going to the AL so expect that to go up a bit. We don't need another Danny Wright. KW should simply go after a middle reliever for a low price and then he is done.

What's wrong with Wright? For some reason I really like the guy. I think it's his guts when he pitches. He's a fighter. If he can ever harness his talent and become consistent, he'll be fine. Right now you just don't know which Danny is gonna show up, Wright or wrong. I guess in the midst of a pennant race you don't want to rely on that type of guy. I just don't want him included in any trade.

In regards to Konerko he is my favorite player on the White Sox. The only reason I advise trading him is because I think his 8 million a year salary will really be a thorn to the low budget Sox. If JR doesn't let PK's salary effect him then I don't have a problem keeping him.

Ponson isn't weak though. ERA is under 4 and he is on pace to win 20 games and can give innings. He's got a dynamite arm and I am alwasy a fan of having lots of pitching.

Al Leiter is a freakin train wreck. He's gone waaaaay downhill in just one year. Last year he was still solid

Ponson has always been highly touted, like Weaver. Maybe the correct coaching can harness them into the studs they were thought out to be years ago.
