Texsox
Looking at what Hunter and Jones just negotiated, let's look at an outfielder the Sox felt was overpriced just a couple years ago. That most fans said we being a greedy s.o.b. and that the Tigers got fleeced by Bora$$ For $15,000,000 he hit .363 139 rbi and scored another 117 times. .434 obp and .595 slugging. What will Hunter or Jones do for the extra $3 mil? So based on recent free agent signings, how does Maggs look at $15 mil?

If you look at it like inflation, the current salaries are similar to Maggs $15 from a few years ago, just with the added inflation. The difference between Maggs and these guys though, was his health. Detroit took a pretty big gamble on him, and won.
witesoxfan
Hunter and Andruw Jones also both play in a much tougher position to fill. Compare Magglio to the 2/$22 that Dye got, and it brings it within reason a bit. Edited December 6, 2007 by witesoxfan
Texsox
The prices always look terrible when they sign, then in a couple years they are behind the curve. Rowand at $14 or $15 mil could look very cheap in a couple seasons.

There's some contract inflation, of course. But this is more a case of the player's numbers luckily catching up to the contract. I wouldn't bet on too many of these from Maggs or Rowand. He hits into too many double plays, but he also hits for a solid average and power.

Vance Law
QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 01:31 PM) So based on recent free agent signings, how does Maggs look at $15 mil? If Mags has a career year every year like 2007, that's a great price for him. If he has magically turned into a consistent .360 hitter at age 33, well, that would be one for the books. Outside of 2002 he'd never had an OPS within 100 points of what he did last year. I expect him to be closer to his .892 career mark than 1.029. $15 million for a .900 OPS in RF is certainly what one would expect in free agency now. Compare Magglio to the 2/$22 that Dye got, and it brings it within reason a bit. Maggs basically put up Dye's 2005 in 2006, then put up Dye's 2006 in 2007. Let's hope he puts up Dye's 2007 in 2008. But what the hell will Dye do? He's in the future!
rockren
Maggs contract at the time for the Tigers was a gamble to say the least. Take into account of Magg's ACL tear that year and the WSox were right to move to another direction. Hell we only spent Maggs money on a core of players that helped us win the '05 World Series. I think we made out ok.
RockRaines
Konerko's contract was considered large and is now the price for avg players. Thats what happens when years go by, look into it.
southsider2k5
The Tigers also paid $15 million for Maggs's 2005 season, which was a complete waste. His contract was basically a 4 year $75 million deal when you factor that in. Even at that price, his numbers aren't that far out of line. Texsox
The point I was making was use that as a reference when looking at these salaries, in a couple years, they sometimes look like bargains. Teams have to project out what a player is going to do. Maggs was a risk, and the Tigers won.
