Linnwood
MLB receives Mitchell Report BY MICHAEL O'KEEFFE AND TERI THOMPSON DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITERS Tuesday, December 11th 2007, 4:10 PM Major League Baseball officials are reviewing George Mitchell's long-anticipated steroid report at the former Senate majority leader's law offices, 21 months after commissioner Bud Selig asked Mitchell to investigate the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. Officials arrived at Mitchell's Manhattan office Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the investigation who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic, and began what is believed to be a 48-hour review period before Mitchell releases the report on Thursday. The report is believed to contain the names of 60-80 former and current players, according to sources, and is based in large part on information provided to Mitchell by former clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski. "We cannot comment on anything," MLB spokesman Rich Levin said. MLB officials were reviewing the information in the report to make sure there are no disclosures of confidential information that would violate the collective bargaining agreement. Mitchell is expected to hold a press conference following the release of the report. Mitchell told the Daily News in an interview in July that he would give MLB advance notice. "I will give the commissioner a report, briefly, before it's made public," he said then. "He'll have a chance to respond to it, but not to edit it. The editing will be mine. People will have a chance to look at it and respond to the part that involved them, but not to edit it." Radomski is a major focus of the report, according to sources. The former clubbie, who pleaded guilty to illegally distributing steroids, agreed to a plea bargain that required him to share information with Mitchell's investigators. Radomski met with Mitchell in August and reportedly provided him with information. Selig announced Mitchell would lead the investigation in March 2006, shortly after the release of "Game of Shadows," the book on the BALCO investigation by journalists Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada that alleged Barry Bonds had used steroids for a five-year period beginning in 1998. Bonds was indicted in November and was arraigned in San Francisco on Friday. Selig said the initial scope of the investigation would involve whether any of the BALCO-related players had taken illicit drugs since testing for performance-enhancing substances commenced with the signing of the 2002 Basic Agreement. But Mitchell was also given a green light to look at any period in baseball history that was relevant to his probe. Mitchell told the Daily News in July that his mission was two-fold: "One, to provide as complete a picture as possible of events that occurred with respect to the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball, and secondly to make recommendations that will enable Major League Baseball to learn from that and to increase the likelihood that they will not be used, that they will not be a significant factor in the future." http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball...ell_report.html
