Jenksismyhero
Ok, so the gf and I are heading to Vegas tomorrow for four days for my company's holiday party. We've never been out there. I'm not a big gambler, though I'd like to hit up some blackjack tables. Any advice? I've got my little pocket card to tell me what to do. Anything else I need to know? Any recommendations on bars (not clubs) and restaraunts? We're staying at a Westin hotel right in the middle of the strip, about 1000 feet from the Bellagio. NorthSideSox72
Make sure you leave some time to just walk up and down the strip, especially at night. Take in the free shows in front of the casinos (what few are left), watch the fountain at Bellagio, etc. That's actually my fave part of Vegas. FlaSoxxJim
I'm not a huge gambler either (the only one in my family who isn't), but I still had a greatt time in Vegas. It was fun to se how many $1 shrimp cocktails and $2 prime rib dinners i could put away in 72 hours. Make sure to get off the Strip and hit some of the old downtown casinos, if only to get the flavor of old Vegas and to see that crazy cool walkway light display. A highlight for me was my first visit to a Gordon Biersch brewpub to sample their excellent European-style lagers. I know the brewery's restaurant assets were sold to Big River a few years back, and I don't know if what they serve in-house on tap is on par with what the G B brewery continues to put out, but it's probably still worth a try. SoxFan562004
There's an Irish bar inside New York New York that I love to have a few beers in when I'm out there
Kid Gleason
I went for the first time last year, and I also am not a big gambler but also wanted to play the blackjack tables. So here is my advice: Hit the $2.00 tables. You money will last you longer and the dealers are VERY helpful at them. Plus, those tables don't attract as many serious gamblers, so even the people at the tables will help you along if you need it. Avoid the strip and do your gambling downtown. We did most of our gambling at the Four Queens. http://www.fourqueens.com/ That was the one where the dealers were VERY helpful. Look for an older (50-ish) Asian guy dealing the tables. His name was something like "Friend" or something odd like that. I'll ask my wife later, she might remember. The strip is fine, but treat it like an amusement park more than anything else. If you order a drink at a slot machine, expect to wait a 1/2 hour to get it. Downtown you get your service instantly. Plan for A LONG time on the bus if you are going between downtown and the strip. Our bus ride, to go all of 7 miles or so, easily took an hour and a half.

southsider2k5
If you are a nature person at all, Red Rock canyon about 20 miles east of Vegas is just incredible. Lots of hiking and climbing that can be done out there.

jasonxctf
i go to vegas 1-2 times per year. Stayed at a lot of places, including the Westin. It's weird because they allow Dogs in the hotel. Small casino so you'll probably want to play elsewhere. Westin table games don't open until nightime. Go play at Ballys/Paris instead. Watch out for the "ladies of the night" at the bar. Some are tranies too. If you do play at the Westin, sign up for the players card. They do good with comps. downtown is overrated. It takes forever to get there (Especially at nighttime), and isn't that cool. Kind of slummy down there too. Watch your wallet. On the strip, I really enjoy playing at Paris, Ballys and Mirage. Caesars is pretty cool too. Fun non-gambling things to do... * Check out the Caesars Mall, including the new portion with the winding escalator. * Check out Caesars pool, its pretty neat. * See if Pete Rose is signing autographs. He's been there the last 3 times I was in Vegas. (My buddies and I wanted to get him to sign a MLB line sheet but thought that was in poor taste) * If you're there on a Sunday or Saturday, hang out in a Sportsbook and take in a day's worth of Football/Basketball. * Aladdin/Planet Hollywood is pretty cool at night. Quite the party. * If you're into Casino hopping, the Wynn and the Mandalay Bay are worth checking out. * Ride the trams... your feet with thank you later * Buffets are pretty expensive now. The days of the $5 all you can eat are long gone. (And probably the places that offer this, you don't want to eat at anyway) * Bellagio fountain is cool. * Check out the free coupon books on-line or at the casinos. Lots of Free Food deals. (Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, etc) * Hooters Casino can be fun to hang out at. * Palms casino is overrated. They have the Playboy tower/club but I think its $40 just to get in. HAVE A GREAT TIME. I LOVE LAS VEGAS.

southsider2k5
Those are great lists Jason! A couple more things to tack on, the top of the stratosphere is a great view of everything, and not too expensive, plus the roller coaster up there is neat. Also the pirate show at Treasure Island is legendary. Finally skip anything Cirque De Soule if you are a straight male.

Downtown doesn't have people every 20 feet handing you call girl cards. First night there we went to the strip and I hated it. Second night was downtown, and I fell in love with Vegas. Downtown also doesn't take long to get to at all, if you stay downtown...where it costs less to stay. I hate the Beatles, so I'll hate both regardless of whats going on on-stage. What about affordable places to drink? I hear prices are crazy unless you're gambling pretty good and get comp'd drinks. I'm considering the liquor store and our hotel room before we head out.

EvilMonkey
You can get cheap blackjack and table games at Casino Royale right in the middle of the strip. And they have beer pong tables setup at O'sheas. And just about every place has low-stakes hold-em tournaments ($100 or less) going several times a day. Big difference playing against real people vs online.

I think it's dark right now for maintenance, anyway. Cheap drinks: $1 Michelobs at Casino Royal Edited December 12, 2007 by mreye
