Just want to add I read word of this deal over an hour ago. It seems some "inside" sources of the Orioles I have read are reputable. Therefore, it's probably safe to assume that the Dodgers bailed on taking back Tejada in the deal, or they are waiting on Kuroda before they decide it's worth it to go after Bedard at all.

This is bad news. Could mean the Indians become the favorite to grab Bedard.

I would say that I am less than impressed by the package they received. 24 year old 3rd baseman hitting .270 in the minors with an OPS around 850, 22 year old pitcher who probably is the most talented player in this package, soon to be 25 year old who put up a 1.60 WHIP and a 5.86 ERA in his rookie season in the NL Central last year, and a pitcher just breaking into the big leagues who'll be 27 around opening day next year, on top of Scott.

Seems like the Orioles are just going for sheer numbers and not caring about actual skill.

See fathom's post. I think this is a gamble by Houston. High risk, High reward, and the return package takes that risk into account.

Well, having just read the Mitchell Report with other baseball executives, I'm sure the Orioles were more concerned about Miggy's roiding than the Astros.

That just seems to me the most obvious reason for this trade. Personally, I don't see why the Astros would have interest regardless, but that's an odd organization down there.

Yeah, I don't think it's speculating that a lot of people believe Tejada is one of the prime candidates to show up on the Mitchell Report. Maybe Baltimore got rid of him before he lost even more value.

That makes sense, but Houston got the same Mitchell Report Baltimore did... (unless Baltimore didn't read it and none of the teams have, only Selig and his boys?)

More importantly, does this open up a possiblity of Juan Uribe to the Orioles?

I want no return, I just want him gone.

Could be, but knowing them, they'll just sign Eckstein. Since they didn't get a 2nd baseman back in this deal, hopefully it means they won't trade Roberts to the Cubs.

Tejada has to be on the Mitchell report otherwise the Orioles are just getting a bulk of mediocre players (one pitcher is an above average prospect, everything else is at least a bit meh). They have repeatedly turned down better offers from squads like the Angels (I have no idea what the Angels offered this year, but the O's turned down deals that had 3 young players going (all 3 of which were better than any one player that the Astros are giving up).

I don't think this move makes the Astros a contender though and I'm guessing in the O's case they are hoping all of these guys contribute and develop at the major league level (and its probably relatively safe to say that all 5 will play with the Astros at some point in the next year, most of which will play for them this year).

You don't think having Eric Patterson included in a Roberts deal is a possibility?

Speaking of the Patterson name.. is Corey a f/a or is he still signed with the Orioles? I wouldnt mind taking a flyer on him, he could even leadoff for us.

I'd much prefer him in the 9 hole, but he's pretty underrated. He's also a Boras client though.

Sure. Just have to beat the Cubs or Dodgers offer.

Are you sure the Dodgers offered on Roberts? Kent just exercised his option and is slated to play 2nd and they have Pierre in CF. I know the Cubs will be after Roberts but besides that the Sox would be the only other team. If they could get Roberts with Richar and a prospect or two (not named Gio) than I think thats a move you make (ink Rowand and you really do have a pretty damn nice looking lineup). The rotation would be shaky, no doubt, but it has two good front of the rotation guys, a major questionmark in Jose, and a couple young pitchers with some upside (maybe not Andrew Miller upside ,but both have major league stuff).
