RME JICO
CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox have declined to tender 2008 contracts to infielder Andy Gonzalez and left-handed pitcher Heath Phillips. Gonzalez, who turns 26 on December 15, batted .185 (35-189) with two home runs and 11 RBI in 67 games as a rookie with the White Sox in 2007. He also hit .242 (30-124) with three homers and 17 RBI in 35 games with Class AAA Charlotte last season. Phillips, 26, was designated for assignment by the White Sox on December 3. He went 13-7 with a 4.30 ERA (83 ER/173.2 IP) and 108 strikeouts in 28 starts with Class AAA Charlotte in 2007. Phillips also made six relief appearances with the White Sox in September, going 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA (3 ER/7.1 IP). Third baseman Joe Crede remains the club's sole arbitration-eligible player http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/press...sp&c_id=cws Couldn't this have been done earlier to protect another player from the Rule 5 draft? Balta1701
That's not a bad thing. Did they offer Crede Arbitration?

Kalapse
There's no word yet on Crede. The official press release just says he's the only remaining Sox player who's Arb eligible.
The Beast
Props to Kenny on the Andy Gonzalez move, here's to me hoping that they'll offer Crede arbitration.
BaseballNick
It would be a huge mistake not to offer Crede arbitration. They have to do it. He won the Silver Slugger in '06 and was on his way to one hell of a promising career before the back issues. I have to think he'll be around long enough to at least prove he's worth something in a trade.

scenario
I heard on the SCORE tonight that the Sox did offer Crede arbitration. I haven't seen a press release on it yet, but I'm sure that the report said it was offered.

NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(RME JICO @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 09:07 PM) The Gonzalez thing is good, but could this have been done prior to the Rule 5 draft? Yes it could have. The Sox could have protected Hernandez, or signed Wing even. Either would have been better than Andy G taking up a slot. But, this sure does look like a prelude to a move. I think it looks like the post-script to a failed FA signing.

Still doesn't explain keeing Andy around. I just don't get it.
SoxAce
This is the best move the sox have made this offseason and I'm including the Quentin trade.

bighurt4life
Sounds to me like we're about to trade minor league players for someone who's going to be on the 25 man roster, or else why keep those guys around and not protect some of the players taken in rule 5? KW strikes again. Why does this shock you? ...I think Williams is becomming somewhat of a joke. ... From his inability to properly gauge peek value of his aging vets to his absolutely ludicrous idea to shop players that completely suck/past their prime/not productive/overpaid at the deadline last year (Count) shows me the guy is becomming like that stooge in your fantasy football league who tries to trade you Cedric Benson for LaDainian Tomlinson. ptatc
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 10:13 AM) I do understand that you can't protect everyone. But I'd like to know why you choose to protect Andy Gonzalez over Fernando Hernandez. They probably didn't consider either worth keeping. If Hernandez was protected, he probably would have been the one non-tendered instead of Gonzalez. Either way both would be gone from the system as it appears they have other plans for that roster spot. So it really doesn't matter who was protected and who wasn't, they were both on the bottom of the totem pole.

Though they couldn't have known for SURE then that they'd need the spot. I will try to stop beating this into the ground, and just say this. They are probably both nothing players in the grand scheme. But whereas Andy G had his shot at AAA and MLB and was miserable at both, Hernandez hadn't even had the chance to try it yet. So even if both are seen as marginal, to me, you keep Hernandez.

I don't think we need to give him props for a move that a crazed donkey would know to make... in fact, I don't think a crazed donkey would have ever had Gonzalez on the roster as long as KW did.
