WCSox
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 12:10 PM) I've been known to rip Frank but he deserves a lot of love for being an ethical ball player and one of the most amazing offensive players to ever play the game (I'm going to start saying that a lot because Thomas' accomplishments were really lessened by the results of the steroid driven players). +1,000,
G&T
QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 03:35 PM) This whole thing is a fluff piece IMHO that will not be used to do anything other then an MLB CYA with Congress and a tool to try and get as much testing through the MLBPA as possible. I said before that Mitchell's speech was CYA for Selig because it gives him an out to do nothing. We will find out soon what Selig will do. HuskyCaucasian
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:52 PM) Cool article. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/subscribe...p-4690710c.html The Big Hurt looked me up and down and then motioned to the batting cage, where a particularly large Toronto Blue Jay was taking some cuts. "See that guy over there?" Thomas said. "See the pipes on him? Well, that boy's a lot bigger than they used to make baseball players." And then Thomas looked me in the eye: "Don't you think?" Which was the problem, of course -- I didn't think. And neither did a lot of other reporters at the time. In retrospect, of course, what Thomas was trying to tell me was: "Dumb-ass, the ball ain't juiced, but the players certainly are." Awesome Story! southsider2k5
Well I will say this much, for those who expected this to be watered down, they sure were proved wrong. Now the really interesting part becomes will Seling grow a pair and punish people for their sins or not?
longshot7
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 12:27 PM) People still b**** about the White Sox not signing him in 1997. His last 4 seasons in Boston he was 40-39. That guy was a good pitcher but not a HOFer at that point. He's a fake. We SHOULD'VE signed him over Jaime Navarro - look at those numbers! I wish he'd have been on the juice for us rather than anyone else. The 97 Sox were a good pitcher short.

Now the really interesting part becomes will Seling grow a pair and punish people for their sins or not? Much as I'd like to see punishments doled out, I think I'd be even happier if this meant: --Tougher, truly random, independent testing --Investment in technology to test for HGH without a blood sample --An investigative office in MLB that constantly researches what drugs are used, and updates testing to keep up That would be the best use of this. iamshack
I think it's interesting that nearly everyone who has posted thus far has implied a very negative reaction or stance towards the players who have used steroids. I've commented several times in this thread that the owners, upper-level execs, and managers were fully aware of exactly what was going on in most instances. And yet I've not commented positively or negatively regarding the players. And I won't, because I think this subject is enormously complex. Why are the players the one's taking such a huge hit here? Why not the rest of the baseball industry? Why so harsh to judge the players, and no one else?

NorthSideSox72
QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 04:14 PM) Why are the players the one's taking such a huge hit here? Why not the rest of the baseball industry? Why so harsh to judge the players, and no one else? Maybe because Jerry Reinsdorff wasn't injecting himself with steroids. Obviously, most of us blame the people actually cheating and committing crimes. I am sure that others deserve blame too, for letting it happen. But clearly the larger burden of guilt lies with the actors, not the bystanders.

Because the players were the ones who actually DID the cheating, of course they are going to get the worst of this. That is pretty obvious if you ask me. Well if someone has pictures of Reinsdorf coming down to the clubhouse passing out vials to players...then I'll put some more of the blame on Jerry. MLB and NFL are funding to find a urine test, and there will be an HGH summit to find new ideas to detect the substance.
