santo=dorf
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...7&fext=.jsp The Rangers and Reds agreed on a trade Friday that will send outfielder Josh Hamilton to Texas in exchange for right-hander Edison Volquez and a Minor League pitcher .... The hard-throwing, 24-year-old Volquez fanned 166 batters while going 14-6 at three Minor League stops last season. Let's trade Buehrle for Volquez

Yeah, why get a prime time talent in Hamilton for a 24 year old minor league pitcher? Great trade for Texas. It's too bad we couldn't offer Gio and Aardsma for him. Yeah, but it would have meant trading Gio or DLS. And they are already earmarked to be traded for Coco Crisp. Well, at least one of them is.... The thing is, the Sox thin system doesn't have anyone like Volquez: someone who has struggled and who's future in the big leagues is dubious, but whose stuff is so good that you can trade him for something valuable. It's not a terribly unfair trade. Both players are talented but carry significant risk. Of course, Hamilton has already excelled in the bigs, so I think Rangers did well here. I'd love to know whether we were in on him and Cinci didn't like any of our prospects for him or if we weren't in on him to begin with. Perhaps our prospects are viewed around baseball worse than some think. Hamilton would have been so nice.

Steve9347
Regardless, talk about a rule 5 that worked out. Man, knowing KW, he didn't even know who Josh Hamilton was until reading rotoworld.com seconds ago.

hitlesswonder
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 04:56 PM) Gio or DLS are easy choices for me for Hamilton. If you think he'll stay clean (and I wish him good luck), sure. But there's a reason why the Reds were willing to trade him and why they got Texas's 4th or 5th best prospect for him after posting a .900 OPS. There's clearly a risk involved with Hamilton,
Rowand44
I'm personally happy that we stayed far away from Hamilton.
BearSox
To anyone who would have wanted a Gio or DLS trade for Hamilton, that would be stupid as f***. The common cold could place Hamilton on the 15 day DL, imagine if he got the flu or something... he has no immune system after heavy drug abuse. Plus, what happens after he gets a couple million or so from some team? He could easily, even though I hope it won't happen, start doing drugs again. I wouldn't mind him as a secondary piece in a trade, but I wouldn't trade one of the two better pitching prospects in baseball for him. RockRaines
Volquez had dropped off in prospect status as of late. He isnt quite the DVD player he once was. Should be a good fit in the NL though. Pretty good trade for both teams.

Chisoxfn
Volquez is incredibly over-rated. He has a nice live arm, but I don't consider him one of the best pitching prospects in baseball and I would have gladly given up one of Gio/DLS for Hamilton (I'd have taken my chances) and I think the Reds would have considered such a deal. With our incredible lack of talent as an organization, he would have been worth the risk for this low of a price. Lousy trade by Cincinnati. Balta1701
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 21, 2007 -> 03:53 PM) Volquez is incredibly over-rated. Personally, I think that right now, giving up either of those guys for Hamilton would have been a mistake. Even without Ramirez, we still had 3 young OF's who at least had the ability to step up and be cheap, we have at least 1 potential rotation opening that Gio can fill, and DLS has too high of a ceiling right now for this team to deal him at this point for anything less than a top of the league guy. Even putting aside Hamilton's drug issues, I wouldn't have dealt either Gio or DLS for him straight up right now, just because of the guys we do have and their costs and ages. iamshack
I love how everyone is slamming the PED guys, but the guy who was snorting coke and smoking crack while getting all of his 26 tattoos, and tried to kill himself 3 times would be a welcome addition. Maybe I'm quibbling, but Gio/DLS aren't two of the "better pitching prospects in baseball". Gio has a lot of question marks and DLS has a long way to go, although he could quickly rise up the ranks.
