Roosevelt swimmers fingered for pig prank

Feuding between two rival Des Moines area high school boy’s swim teams led to what Roosevelt High School swim coach Steve Teter referred to as “retaliatory” action that left stolen pig fetuses on the car antennas in the Dowling Catholic High School parking lot earlier this week

Teter today said members of the Roughriders’ swim team were “bombarded with snow balls and foul language” hurled by members of the Dowling boy’s team Monday before a meet at the West Des Moines high school. Dowling won 99-71.

He said this prompted some members of the Roosevelt team to skip Tuesday’s practice, steal preserved pig fetuses and roughly a pound of crawfish from the school’s biology lab and deposit them in the Dowling lot.

About 15 cars were “decorated,” Dowling Assistant Principal Ron Meyers said Thursday. He did not return a telephone call today .

Neither the alleged theft nor the vandalism was reported to police, but a police officer assigned to Dowling contacted his counterpart at Roosevelt to investigate.

Roosevelt Principal Kathie Danielson Thursday said science teachers couldn’t be sure the pigs came from Roosevelt.

Teter said he will “take disciplinary action” against some students of the 47-member swim team and that several members have been suspended from participating in the team’s next meet against Des Moines East-Lincoln Jan. 24 at Lincoln High School.

“It is also being handled by the (school) administration, who will determine what other disciplinary action is appropriate,” Teter said, adding he was not at liberty to release the names of players involved or how many swim team member have been suspended.

“I’m ashamed they bring this kind of publicity to the swim team. There are a lot of great kids that come out of this program,” he said. “It’s really sad when one or two kids make everyone else look bad.”

Roosevelt needs to beat East-Lincoln to win the Metro Conference dual meet title.

“I’m not going to worry about winning. It’s more important we set a good example,” Teter said. “It’s more important to me they students learn there are consequences to their actions.”
