Is Manny Ramirez kidding or serious?

May 31 OF Manny Ramirez celebrated his 36th birthday on Friday at Camden Yards and showed off a watch he received from his mother for his birthday. The visiting fans from Boston also sang a chorus of "Happy Birthday" to the eclectic outfielder during pre-game batting practice. When a reporter remarked on his birthday, Ramirez said: "36 here," he said, according to the Boston Globe. "39 in the Dominican."

Manny moved to Washington Heights in Manhattan when he was like 12 or 13 IIRC. It's possible he's serious and they lied about his age when he first moved to the states, but the odds aren't as high as they would be with most guys from down there.

Prior being Prior.

Yeah, I saw the headline on rotoworld, and I wondered what kind of snark the comment would use.

Mark Prior will undergo shoulder surgery this week and miss the rest of the season.

Prior was found to have a tear in the capsule of his right shoulder a couple of weeks. He initially opted for rehab over surgery, but that plan didn't last for long. There won't be any idea about his status for 2009 until after the surgery is performed. Jun. 1 - 5:06 pm et

I should have realized, every joke's been used and it's just not funny anymore. There's nothing left to say.

If this turns out to be the end of the road, I gotta say -- As much of an ass as he supposedly is, and as big of a disappointment as he certainly is, and as ebullient as I was when his team pissed away the NLCS, he was still one hell of a talent. Adios, muchacho.

I recall him considering himself some kind of cross between Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. I'd imagine he atleast got the Clemens part correct.

David Ortiz out for at least a month with a torn tendon in wrist. Season ending surgery may be required.

So he tore his tendon on a regular swing? Another wrestling style injury.

Moving Joba to the rotation is such a dumb idea. It kills the Yankees bullpen, as it makes it an 8 inning game instead of the 6 inning game they could make it with Joba/Rivera. Ask any scout, and they'll tell you that Joba was born to be a back-end reliever.

You shouldn't have to ask a scout. He is a future stud closer, IMO.

Yankees need starting pitching bad, so don't blame them for trying. They should give him about 5 starts to see what he looks like, and if they don't like it, back to the pen.

For sure. The problem with this move also is this: What is Joba going to start, 20 games? Let's say if they had a generic guy starting those games (just throw out any BS name), they'd have gone like 8-12 maybe? They are 0-1 so far with Joba, and I'll say for the sake of argument they'll go 14-6 in his starts (and that's optimistic IMO). They will lose AT LEAST six, maybe more games, due to his not being there late in the game. Hell, one of them was on Monday night at Minnesota IMO. So not only is it dumb in the sense that he's made to pitch late in games, it's dumb by the numbers too. He got off to a rough start tonight.

BTW, Jay Bruce is 3-7 in the Philly series and his average has dropped 39 points. Love that.

Smoltz career may be over...

Braves' Smoltz to have season-ending shoulder surgery

ESPN.com news services

Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz, who spent five weeks on the disabled list with an inflamed rotator cuff, said he will have season-ending shoulder surgery.

The report first appeared in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Smoltz confirmed the report and said on his radio show that he will miss the rest of the season.

The Braves have scheduled an 11:30 a.m. news conference, which Smoltz, general manager Frank Wren and manager Bobby Cox will attend.

Smoltz, 41, faces the possibility of the end of his career. He had returned from the disabled list on Monday, but blew a save against the Florida Marlins, giving up two earned runs on three hits. The following day, Smoltz awoke to soreness in the shoulder and arm.

Smoltz, 3-2 with a 2.00 ERA in five starts, has been on the DL twice this season with his troublesome shoulder, which first bothered him last season and continued to hurt in spring training.

He went on the disabled list April 29 after noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews diagnosed a severely inflamed biceps muscle and an inflamed rotator cuff, but did not find any significant structural damage.

Smoltz returned to the bullpen after the latest DL stint, believing that role would be less stressful on his shoulder.

He was a closer from 2001 to 2004, recording 154 saves, and is the only pitcher in baseball history with 200 wins and 150 saves. Smoltz led the NL with 55 saves in 2002, his first full season as closer.

Smoltz, who was the 1996 Cy Young Award winner, has endured four operations on his right elbow.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

In full agreement, the way their staff is built now it's going to hurt them more than help them this year. The bridge to Mariano is very bad now, and Mussina and Petite are not going to throw many CGs or go 8 and while Joba builds up he will be going 4-6 innings. Do they play the Tigers before Rodney or Zumya get back? Those might be some interesting 6-8 innings in those games.
