Some SoxFest quotes

Where are all the SoxFest threads? You would not even know it's going on by the look of this board. Anyways, a recap of the fan question session: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...1,4648418.story

Some interesting stuff:

"They said the toughest battle in spring training will be at second base between Danny Richar, Alexei Ramirez, Pablo Ozuna and Juan Uribe."

"Guillen didn't rule out Jerry Owens becoming a full-time center fielder if he handles left-handed pitchers as well as right-handers. 'That will be dictated in spring training,' said Guillen, who added Ozuna or Carlos Quentin could be in the lineup against tough left-handers."

"As of now, Guillen said Josh Fields would get the nod at third base because he's uncertain about the health of Joe Crede, who is recuperating from lower back surgery in June."

"Williams added that Contreras, who lost 17 games, "will be the key to the rotation. The kids will be fine.""

I like this one.

When one fan praised Williams for his work and said that both he and Guillen should get a lifetime pass for winning the 2005 World Series, Williams thanked the young man and added, "I wish your name was Jerry Reinsdorf."

Thought this was interesting too..

Guillen added he's considering moving Jose Contreras from the third to the fourth spot in the rotation between John Danks and Gavin Floyd.

I like this one.

The move of Contreras to the 4th spot could help the bullpen, as they might be taxed if Danks and Floyd get hit hard early and can only go 4 innings. The inconsistency of Danks and Floyd should be taken into account. At least Contreras can give innings for the most part.

I do think Contreras is very key this year. The sox need him to step and post a near 4.00 ERA

Anyone see that Quentin is only 80-85% right now. Not worried, but that could come into play for the start of the season. Most people have him penciled in, but we may more realistically start with:

Owens CF

Cabrera SS

Swisher LF

Thome DH

Konerko 1st

Dye RF

AJ C

Fields 3rd

Richar 2nd

I could see an Owens/ Quentin platoon to start the year. Or even an Owens/ Ozuna tandem depending on how healthy Quentin is. The sox shouldn't rush Quentin or he may not be bale to help much later in the year.

This morning, on White Sox Weekly, Kenny Williams says:

- Joe Crede and Josh Fields won't be on the same team. He then says he won't be trading Josh Fields before backtracking and saying that you always have to leave the door open.

- The key to the starting rotation is Jose Contreras. Denks and Floyd will be fine.

- The bullpen will be amongst the best in the league.

- Paul Konerko is not going anywhere. He has not had any trade conversations with the Angels about trading them.

- 2B (Richar/Uribe, etc) is the one position that will be a training camp battle.

- Kenny expects the flexibility of the roster to give Ozzie Guillen lot of different looks in the lineup, capable of going with a thumper lineup and just as easily going with more of a contact/speed lineup.

- The payroll (currently) may have already exceed the revenue that they have expected to bring in.

- Kenny doesn't believe in rebuilding as much as reloading. Any trades made will be to help the team win the WS. (Of course, this does leave room for Kenny to trade Crede for a minor leaguer, and for Kenny to say that he is adding pitching depth to the minors).

This is the one quote that got my goat...

Guillen admitted he would have a tough time keeping Uribe motivated after he lost his starting shortstop job to Orlando Cabrera.

I'm really hoping this isn't the case...because if it is...jettison his ass off right now...RIGHT NOW! I honestly can't see that being the case because if Juan comes in and works hard...he very well could be the starter. Doubtful...but very realistic. But Ozzie would know him better than anybody...so it is a real concern IMO.

I also got a kick out of someone demanding, "WE WANT ANSWERS!....." Puhlease....can you be anymore friggin dramatic.

... I remember the last time we heard this. Wasn't it about 1 year ago?

They have to prove that to me....I like the fact they added some veterans who have had success, and part of Kenny's assessment is that MacDougle and Thorton will rebound to form 5 dependable options (along with Jenks, Dotel, and Linebrink). Kenny also mentioned that Boone Logan held lefties to a .230 average last season.

If the contracts that just "OK" players are getting this off season doesn't motivate Uribe, nothing will.

There was a quote yesterday where KW was conceding Ramirez may need a year at AAA.

No way!

Dude might actually need a year at AA and then another at AAA.

(Actually, I don't think I'd go that far for real, but AR has almost a zero percent chance of being good at the ML level right away. He isn't Roy Hobbs.)

I'm surprised there isn't more information coming out of Soxfest. Where are the youtube videos? Where are the posts made live from the Soxfest? Would anyone like to share their pictures? I'm excited about the 2008 Sox and starved for some more baseball discussion.

I too am surprised that there was absolutely no discussion from SoxFest.

But if he was, that would be pretty neat

Does anyone want to share their experience at soxfest?... Or should I say does anyone want to add anything other than whats been written?

Any small chats with players or anyone from the organization?

The only thing I've heard/read about is the praise KW is getting for the moves from fans aside from a few exceptions.

Good post. A friend of mine went this year. (casual fan you can say) He never heard/knew who Quentin was (just knows/follows the sox no other teams, even though he didn't know who Fields was either ) and now is proclaiming him as his favorite player after soxfest. Hellova guy from what I've heard. Swish was supposedly shy, but he is dealin with us Chicagoans afterall..heh.. n was coo too. Wish I would have went. Maybe next season. :)

This season will have a very loose, friendly, crazy characters filled with young n old guys.
