Quintessential for a catch all:

Is Wise even fast anymore? I havent really taken notice. He's never been much of a basestealer at MLB it seems.

If he's not, then that eliminates the one of the only two reasons (besides leftiness) to keep him here over BA.

:)

Was reading Mark Gonzalez's answers on the Trib site and found someone referencing a Pirates blog. The guy who posts on this Pirates blog is some sort of scout (supposedly), although I don't know that for sure.

Anyway, point is he the guy thought Vazquez was tipping his pitches while in the stretch. Here's an excerpt:

That would explain his dominance out of the windup. I think he had a bunch of Ks pitching out of the windup in his last outing and he struggled once he walked guys (like the first inning).

Here's a random question...

With Mack no longer on the club, who is this team's emergency catcher?

I don't know why, but I somehow thought it was Pablo Ozuna. Paul Konerko was originally a catcher though, LOL.

I think you can also look at the fact that for the past 5 to 6 starts he's been living on the outside part of the plate and usually missing and falling behind. He needs to reclaim the inside part and when he does that he'll be back to being one of the better pitchers in the AL.

That occurred to me as well, but then I remembered the story of Ozuna going out to warm up Bobby Jenks once (the other catchers must not have been ready yet). As I recall, Bobby's first pitch sailed right past Pablo to the backstop, and that was the last of that experiment.

And I honestly can't think of anyone else who you'd want back there.

You know who would probably make a good catcher in some ways though? Juan Uribe. He's quick with the reflexes, has a cannon arm, and is a strong, heavy guy. Not that I think they'd ever do that, but, I think he'd maybe be suited to it.

What do you guys think of how streaky the Sox are?

Either we are worldbeaters like we are again or we are in the tank.

I hope when we do lose (I hope it's after we rattle off 15 in a row) we somehow gain consistency.

Maybe that's impossible with this team. I'll take first place either way.

We have one of the best records in baseball.

How do you win a division? By beating teams IN your division. We're 23-11. One of the best inter-division records in baseball. I believe #2 behind Arizona.

Define "in the tank." Streaks of 3 games or greater this season:

Losing:

6 games (April 29th - May 5th)

3 games (May 11th - May 13th)

3 games (May 30th - June 1st)

3 games (June 10th - June 12th)

3 games (June 20th - June 22nd)

Winning:

5 games (April 3rd - April 7th)

3 games (May 8th - May 10th)

8 games (May 14th - May 22nd)

7 games (June 3rd - June 9th)

3 games (June 17th - June 19th)

6 games (June 26th - current)

The major losing stretches are often bookended by substantial winning streaks. Between May 23rd and June 1st the Sox went 4-6 this stretch came after an 8 game win streak and before a 7 game win streak. So that's a 19-6 stretch.

Between June 10th and June 25th the Sox went 6-9. This stretch of games came after a 7 game win streak and before the current 6+ game win streak.

You have to go back to that awful stretch at the beginning of May to find any substantial stretch of bad baseball from the Sox.

So since the Beginning of May the Sox have stuck to a pattern of rallying off a big win streak then played .400 ball for about 2 weeks, go on another big win streak, play .400 ball for 2 weeks then go on another big win streak. Sounds like the Sort of thing a good team does to me.

The Sox are 34-19 (.642) since that 0-6 road trip at the beginning of May.

Question for those who know where to look... How many games into the season was Cleveland 15 games back in 2005?

I know what your getting at, but Hafner was a beast that year along with Victor. They are both hurt and Hafner is not coming back in the foreseeable future.

I want to say August 1st but that's a complete guess.

EDIT: Looked it up, it was indeed the 1st.

I really wasn't trying to get at anything, and it definately wouldn't have been Cleveland I was worried about. Detroit is 100% the most scary team for the Sox in this division.
