Official 2007-08 College Basketball Thread

Recommended Posts

Yeah this thread has been friendly compared to the Illini board stuff, as it hasn't gotten personal and turned into death threats and stuff. The illini boards are too crazy even for a nut job like me to visit these days.

many, many programs have gone through what we are going through right now for varying reasons. look at uconn, or maryland, or even kentucky. these are programs that within the past decade or so have won titles and subsequently had struggles for whatever reason. even duke and carolina have had downturns. it happens.

That's a fair point, but the difference is this: Those programs, with the exception of Maryland (who like Illinois, can't get recruits and thus is in a death spirial that will last for years), are recruiting well and showing/will show signs of coming out of it fast. UConn only missed the dance last year, and this years 7-2 team (who has 2 close losses to top 20 teams) will make the dance, and has a lot of talent, and I'd be shocked if Kentucky doesn't get good again soon with Billy G as coach.

Downturn years should be like last year with all the momentum this program has, not like what this year will be, around .500 and in the NIT at best. Wisconsin doesn't have 1/10th the talent to recruit that Illinois does, yet they know their role and have consistent success under Bo Ryan. Yeah they aren't a team that will win a national championship, but I wouldn't mind Illinois being like that, for example. The scary thing about this team is Patrick Beverly, Jeremy Pargo, and E'Twaun Moore could all be on it if Bruce had wanted them, but instead Bruce was too busy whiffing on big targets. So he can't recruit, and he turns down good guys he COULD get.

Well, Gordon was the only recruit Weber has had on a par with Richmond and he did have trouble keeping him. It's not like the rest of Weber's recruits were 5 stars everyone wanted. But I wasn't appealing to past history, but rather what I think is an obvious future. I don't see why the 09-10 recruits would be less likely to come to Illinois if Weber were replaced, I think it might actually make the program more appealing.

As you say, only time will tell.

If I can switch to a more interesting subject --are you surprised at McCamey's play so far? I didn't see him play before now, and I get the impression you did. I don't want this to sound like I'm ripping on him (he's a freshman), but he doesn't seem very quick. Do you think he can be a quality point guard in the Big Ten eventually? I was hoping that Illinois would have a guard that could penetrate finally, but it's possible that that's not all on McCamey -- it seems like the UI motion offense doesn't lend itself to that.

Because players rarely commit just to the school...it's so much more about the coaches now rather than the actual school itself. For obvious reasons.

Not that you're asking me, but McCamey is definitely slower than most point guards, but being as big and as physical as he is can make up for it...makes drawing contact a lot easier. I have a feeling he'll be splitting time between the 1 and 2 for that reason, but having a solid ball handler on the wing and a guy with that size is always a plus.

Ugh. I'm afraid of that. Statistically, WKU doesn't look bad.

They're real athletic and Courtney Lee is a freakin stud who is pretty much impossible for us to guard because he's so much taller than our guards. TY had a crap load of trouble with him last year and he could guard anyone. If this game was on the road, I'd give us a 0 percent chance but since it's at home, I'll give us like a 10 percent shot.

This Mizzou/Illinois game has some of the worst officiating I've ever seen. The jump ball call on Mizzou was terrible, and then the non-existent travel call on Leo Lyons is as bad as it gets.

College refs are terrible at their jobs. Nothing else to say about it. They have no clue what they are doing.

Frazier clearly got fouled after that rebound. These officials suck really bad.

There wasn't a foul on that, but it doesn't matter. Mizzou didn't deserve to win that game. They're one of the worst coached teams in the NCAA.
