sircaffey
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 8, 2008 -> 10:06 AM) Maybe, but Forde's article also didn't let the Indiana fans off the hook talking about when Sean May came back to Bloomington. I see nothing wrong with what the fans did until they started throwing things at the Gordons and the Hoosier fans. That's overboard. But chanting? Come on...these guys hear worse on the playgrounds then "Liar" and "Cheater." In fact, they say worse to each other when talking smack. I think it was the "f*** you Gordon" chants. Soxbadger
be just god awful in the worst Big 10 I've seen in over a decade of watching it closely. This statement is just mind blowing. You clearly have not been watching the Big 10 if you feel this is the worst big 10 in a decade. Can you name any other year in the last 10 where 4 teams could arguably be big 10 champ? The absence of an elite team does not make the league the worst its been. In fact the Big 10 is probably better than it was last year. Wisc 2007 > 06 MSU 07 > 06 Indiana 07 > 06 Purdue 07 > 06 Minnesota 07 > 06 So outside of OSU, Illinois, what other good Big 10 is actually worse than last year. I find it very hard to believe that youve been watching the big 10 for the last 10 years hard core because my guess is when you were 11 you werent exactly a basketball mastermind. If you don't think this is a historically bad Big 10, your not watching the games. I won't even argue this point because it's a waste of time and not even close. And the reason 4 teams can win the league is a point to my argument, since (1) there isn't one or two clubs that are really good and (2) There are 7 teams that completely suck and can barely win games behind the top 4. I mean, I've seen you make some asinine arguments but this is right up there. And as for the chants at the game last night, IU fans get their chance to get even next year when Illinois will become the first team in Big 10 basketball history to play a convicted felon. That should be fun. Edited February 8, 2008 by whitesoxfan101

Iowa, Michigan, NW, PSU, Illinois all suck. That's what makes the Big Ten down this season. Then you have Purdue, Minnesota, OSU, and IU who are young teams. Perhaps near the end of the season when these teams age and gain experience the Big Ten will be up, but right now, it's just not very good overall. thedoctor
i will be really happy when this entire thing is behind both illinois and indiana fans. in general i tend to think they are similar fanbases, classy, with a keen eye for tradition, and both possessing a lunatic fringe that embarrasses even fellow fans. debating who was right and who was wrong in the situation is entirely pointless now. i'm not proud of how some people acted last night, but i also think it was relatively tame compared to what people were suggesting was going to happen. of course, i know some indiana fans will take issue with that and claim that last night was some horrendous episode, but to me they were going to say that whatever happened. i think the worst part is that the two people at the center of the thing (weber and e.j.) come out of it with a little bit of a stain even though neither really deserves this degree of negative attention. i firmly believe gordon could have handled the situation better, but he's a kid and you can't hold it against him until the end of time. i think it is really unfortunate that it has to be brought up with regularity when you talk about him. he is a rare talent, and as weber said last night, one of the best freshman he's seen in his 20 years in the league. we should be talking about that, not some extraneous bullcrap. as for weber, this has just become another opportunity to those who already have an axe to grind against him to chirp about what he should and shouldn't do. i love it when people try to put themselves in his shoes and dictate how he should have handled all of the situations that have grown out of this. gmafb. for whatever you want to say about weber (and he has plenty of faults) he's someone who for the most part has unwavering dedication to and from those who have played for him and coached with and against him. that tells me a helluva lot more about him than any of the tripe associated with this entire mess. I can and will not ever let it go, a convicted felon should not be on scholarship at a land grant public state university to represent it on a national stage for something like basketball. Ever. I still would like somebody to come up with another convicted felon to play in the Big 10, because it's never happened and is a burden of embarssment Illinois will have to live with forever starting this fall. Yes, Gordon and especially Sampson acted poorly in the whole saga, but that is nothing compared to a school supporting felons to play on it's team. And I find it funny that everybody is so sure Sampson will be gone just because Loren Tate and a few insiders (people full of crap on the illini fan boards) say it is potentially true. Sampson is indeed a scumbag, but the Illini fans made him look like a saint last night. I do agree with you doctor that Indiana would have b****ed over the fan behavior last night though no matter what (although I give credit to the Indiana fans here, only one of them showed up and b****ed like a baby), but the Illini fans lame actions last night gave them reason to do so. So what? Am I missing something? That's all that went wrong with Illini fans last night. I know at least 3 others threw drinks at them, one hitting a bullseye of Gordon's Mom, and that the orange krush was threatening them through the first overtime, which caused extra security to show up. Not to mention the cheap shot Frazier took at Gordon before the game. My issue beyond that is the crowd, when it wasn't chanting "f*** you Gordon" (nice), was busy with the LAME chants of "nobody likes you" and "liar". Give me a break, be creative or something. Well friends that were behind the basket near the IU section, not to mention the Illini board and ESPNEWS, have reported that Gordon's mom was a direct hit of a cup of ice last night with some sort of beverage in it. I'd have to search to find a link that 3 things were thrown at her, but you can do the basic math that no drunk would be on target enough to get a direct hit the first time. ChiSox_Sonix
i'm a UCONN fan so i feel i'm impartial here, but i agree that the pre-game chest bump was out of line. Any statement whatsoever directed at his family was also out of line. As for the chants? It happens in sports. Deal with it. Did he commit to Illinois? Yes. Did he then spurn them to go elsewhere? Yes. Is he a liar? No, but he put himself in a position to be faced with taunts of "Liar" and "Traitor". That is the fans right to chant, to try and get under the skin of the opposing players. The "f*ck you gordon" was out of line however, regardless of his family being there or not (they knew what theyd be walking into, they're adults, they still made the decision). The throwing of cups/beads/ice whatever also crossed a major line (technically that's battery). The crowd did its job in getting in his head with the "clean" taunts, and that kind of stuff happens everywhere (remember Carolinas hatred for JJ Reddick?). They were out of line at times, but it began as simply a hostile environment for the visitor, in which nothing is wrong with that. Frazier made a stupid decision (i wouldnt have been against a technical for it), the fans who threw stuff are imbiciles, and the coach for not shaking his hand is an immature poor example setter for his team who should be getting killed in tghe media for that. However, for the majority of the arena who simply chanted "Liar" and "Traitor"? Thats not a big deal. It happens in rivalries, albeit more often in pro sports. Suck it up and move on. For Indiana fans it should be a done deal now.

Thanks for the info, I forgot all about that but you have jogged my memory and are correct. Again, Illinois makes Sampson look classy, which is amazingly difficult to do with the exception of Illinois lately. I have seen almost every Illinois game since Lon Krueger took over, but it'll be difficult for me to watch whenever Jamar Smith is on the floor next season. And btw, just to clarify, I didn't find the liar and cheater chants inappropriate, just incredibly lame. They might as well have went to the 2nd grade handbook and went to "liar liar, pants on fire" and "cheater cheater pumpkin eater".
