We are all involved. It keeps happening over and over again. High school, college. Doesn't matter. And yes, I'm sick to my stomach about this and also for our nation. Perhaps we were too quick to kick God out of the schools.

That's a rather inappropriate Pat Robertson-like statement there.

This is about a nut off his meds who had a lot of guns.

I wonder why he was at Northern on a Thursday when he goes to school at Champaign. Someone has to be able to trace him.

EDIT: Just saw Soxy comments. I'll edit out the argumentative remarks but that Pat Robertson comment remains.

That's a rather inappropriate remark there too, if I might say so myself. The worst thing to do in situations like this is to break it down into a stereotype. Start thinking about a solution if you want to do something constructive.

Uhh, the story said he was on medication and wasn't taking them for some time.

Warning at my school now:

SECURITY ALERT FROM UIC POLICE

This afternoon, an anonymous e-mail was received by a number of people at UIC, threatening violence on campus sometime this spring.

While we have no way of knowing at this time whether this is a genuine threat, the UIC police department is pursuing it very seriously. A full-scale investigation is underway in conjunction with the Chicago police, and patrols on campus, already stepped up in the wake of Thursday’s tragedy at Northern Illinois University, have been increased further.

In the meantime, all campus operations will continue as normal. However, we ask everyone to be attentive, and as always, if you see criminal or suspicious activity, please notify the UIC police immediately at (312) 555-5555 (or 5-5555 from campus phones), or, if you are off-campus, dial 911. For general questions about safety and security, the number for UIC police is (312) 996-2830.

Please also be aware that an update from me on campus security in the wake of yesterday’s shootings at NIU was transmitted earlier today and should be arriving in e-mail boxes sometime tonight or in the early-morning hours, and already is posted on the UIC Emergency Information page (link on the UIC home page). This note gives a further overview of security measures in place on the UIC campus.

Sincerely,

John Richardson, Chief of Police

Nothing's going to change in my life. I will still most likely sit at the front of the room during lectures and classes. I won't be looking over my shoulder. But this does scare me on a deep level. I just figure there's nothing I can do or not do, and if something happens it'll be something to deal with then and not before.

My best regards and deepest sympathies for all at NIU. I contacted all three people I know there and fortunately they're okay.

A mention of God when refering to a tragic situation is inappropriate? Sure. No problem.

My Dad said he bought his ammo off the same website the asshole from VaTech used for his killings. Anyone else read this?

There is another thread about it. He was also a customer. The dealer turned in that bit of info.

Being around campus and just seeing and hugging people at the vigil and memorials and stuff was a bit of a positive for me today, I'm glad I decided to stay until tomorrow morning. I am not afraid to go back to class, at all, but the depression and pain of the events is really starting to sink in. I can't wait for the day that NIU is back and stronger than ever. I know it will be soon, but right now, it just sucks basically.

I had to go over to Good Sam in DG for some tests yesterday afternoon and I ended up talking with 2 of the families who had been injured in that mess. One was a girl who was shot in the eye. And another is a male who has so many pellets from the buck shot in him they aren't sure if he'll make it due to massive infection. Despite their issues they are extremely upbeat and stronger than I would have ever expected given their situation. So very sad and inspiring at the same time.

I actually came across this shot of the interior of the lecture hall in Cole where it happened. Should give folks who haven't been a visual idea.

I thought you wrote "WHEN it happened"...and my heart raced to see the picture.

phew, thanks for the picture though.

old school lecture hall. Ours are all theater style with rising seats. Much different then I imagined, thanks for posting.

Yeah, you almost get the impression on TV that Cole is like a newer building based on appearance of the exterior, and I'm not sure how old the current version of the hall is, but Cole and a building itself have been there as long as the school has according to everything I have ever been told, and the design of the lecture hall reflects that. Shooter had a clear and flat shot at everybody, which I guess would be easier than shooting uphill like in a theater style room. And I don't think anybody that goes here either hasn't or isn't taking classes at Cole Hall, lots of gen ed stuff in that place and a ton of students in each session.

I just saw the interview with the girlfriend of the shooter, Jessica Baty. I went to high school and some college with that girl, and further more, she dated my roomate in college. It was wierd to see her on cnn.com

I feel bad for her and all the others that knew the shooter. It's bad enough for the mixed feelings they must have due to being close to this guy, but furthermore, they appear to have almost all been conned by him to the point where they still don't realize what a monster he was. It's bad enough when somebody you care about turns out to be a killer, but when he's also a very good con man........yikes.

It would appear that I have missed some developments...how was he a "con artist"? I last heard he had some mental instabilities and had fallen off his meds.

That's not a development, it's an editorialization (I wonder if that's a word). Almost everybody they have talked to, between his girlfriend and professors here and even friends he has, has been shocked he would do this and is saying he's isn't a monster and wasn't acting strange or anything. The only sign of abnormality to even come out is the medication thing, in fact. To me, a turned out to be mass murderer who had almost no red flags distinguishable to those around him is almost the definition of con artist.

Well, Cole has been there awhile, I want to say it was built in the 60's, clearly that isn't how long the school has been around. Altgeld is over 100 years old and housed the entire school itself when NIU was first established. I've probably been in that lecture hall (I believe it is the "Jameson" room of Cole Hall) close to if not over 100 times for various classes I took while at NIU. The room is actually more slanted than the picture would lead you to believe, but it is not nearly as angled as more modern stadium style seating lecture halls or theaters. From memory I would say the stage is almost even in height with the back of the room, (where the students enter and exit) so when the shooter entered and opened fire on the stage he would be shooting slightly down on the room, really making it nearly impossible to miss with a shotgun. The whole thing makes me sick.
