chimpy2121
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 1, 2008 -> 09:13 PM) Fullerton got beat down by Stanford yesterday and today. I hate this new f***ing schedule. Quality games like UCLA get moved to the middle of the week so I can't go. It will be interesting to see if they can pull anything out against the Tree's before playing the studly Bruins in a midweek series. Fullerton is way too young and I have my fears about them with this new schedule. I have no idea what we're going to do this week. We will just be getting done with a 4 game series with Auburn tomorrow. We have an off day on Monday, but then we play two against UNC-Ashville on Tuesday/Wednesday. Then there is an off day on Thursday followed by a 3 game ACC set with Maryland. Our pitchers were all moved up a day, but usually they only pitch once a week. Now they need to be going off of short rest. Also, I wouldn't want to waste our Friday starter on Tuesday when we have conference games coming up. The same goes for our Saturday starter on Wednesday. The starter today won't be able to pitch unless he goes really short on Wednesday, but he threw 7 innings (116 pitches today). Our 4th SP goes tomorrow with no chance of Tuesday/Wednesday. The way it looks is that we'll have our 3, 4, 1 pitchers going against their 1, 2, 3 for or first conference series. Oh well, good teams get through this kind of stuff I guess. danman31
Mizzou went 3-1 this weekend with Friday wins over Cal and fringe-top 25-team San Diego State, a 5-4 loss to top-20 San Diego, and a win over Cal Poly today. They are 6-2 on the season, fair start considering a decent schedule. On Friday, potential first-rounder Aaron Crow k'd 10 in 5 innings, but gave up 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks. Next up is the home opener Tuesday (if it happens, supposed to be freezing) and the rest of the cupcake part of the schedule which is a 13-game homestand. chimpy2121
We finished out the sweep today with a 10-1 win. Mike McGee looked awesome pitching 7 innings without giving up a run. Also, Dennis Guinn hit his 3rd homer of the series as he tried to state his case for ACC Player of the Week. Jack Rye also came back yesterday and I absolutely love how the lineup looks with him in there. I just wish our pitching wasn't so questionable (especially the relief pitchers). chimpy2121
Justin Smoak's monstrous home run against Clemson, followed by the way baseball should be play. Hit a bomb, hit a batter. FSU won 11-4 today against UNC-A. Game two is tomorrow night.

chimpy2121
So...bottom of the 8th comes around and we're losing 5-0. Top of the 9th comes, and we're winning 10-5....I'm still shocked. That was a great comeback. Dennis Guinn has an OPS of 1.513 right now in 9 games (32 ABs) Edited March 7, 2008 by chimpy2121
Chisoxfn
Fullerton picked up there third win in a row on Friday. The starter Jorgensen really struggled with his command but they brought in a freshman who had a filthy curve and shut down Souther Miss. After getting there asses handed to em by Stanford, Fullerton swept a midweek 2 game set against UCLA (home/road) and started things off right against Southern Miss (my frist game in attendance). Gonna hit it up on Sunday as well to see what there Friday night starter Kaplan is all about (It is weird how due to the additional mid-week games, you end up seeing on Friday/Saturday games teams going with bullpen by committee's as opposed to there #1/#2). Only if the team doesn't have more than 3 starters. Mizzou had their home opener today (finally- 2 cancelled games already). Highly touted Aaron Crow was sick in the cold weather. 7 IP, 0 R, 9 K, 2 BB, 2 hits in the 5-1 Tiger win. I looked at the gun for a couple batters, but it was already the 6th and I didn't see fastballs so who knows what he was throwing earlier. Doubleheader tomorrow. chimpy2121
We beat Maryland twice today. The first game was 5-4 with our SP going the complete game (1st complete game since 2006). The second was 16-0. I think our first 5 batters scored in the first inning. It was a good way to start conference play.

Aside from your pitching rich Tigers, what college baseball team has more than 3 legitimate starters? They have went how many years using 3 man rotations in college baseball. I know one thing, starters are going to be asked to pitch more than they ever have and that is a bad thing for both college baseball and professional baseball (given the fact that college pitchers tend to get over-worked as is, nor are there arms truly ready for a more significant workload, imo). These new schedule is complete horses***. That said I don't mind the fact that this Sunday I'm going to get to see our ace go. Although I don't know how good our ace will actually be (but I'm spoiled considering Fullerton year in year out tends to have one of the best staffs in the country). I also learned today that they have the 14th best offense in college basketball (going by PPG).

danman31
Still though, teams had 4 starters per week anyway with midweek games. Granted, those games tended to be bullpen by committee or rotating starters, but it's not too different. They probably need to push the season another week later, give teams another weekend to get these games in.

Granted, those games tended to be bullpen by committee or rotating starters, but it's not too different. They probably need to push the season another week later, give teams another weekend to get these games in. I know Fullerton/LB State/UCI never had more than 3 starters. For midweek games they would typically throw out the bullpen and go with the hot arms in the pen and see what stuck (those are typically opportunity for underclassmen to make a name for themselves). In Friday's performance Fullerton's freshman reliever that came in had a NASTY curve and was using it to get a lot of guys to strike out swinging. Now, teams practically need 5 man rotations. It wasn't bad when you had the ocassional mid-week series as you were able to get things stacked up and prepared for it, but now there is really none of that so guys are going to end up starting a lot more and freshmen are going to get thrown into the fire a lot. Bottom line, its going to lead to inflated offensive numbers and deflated pitching numbers. I predict you'll see a lot more 20 run games this season than in the typical college baseball season. chimpy2121
We got the sweep today with a 9-8 win. We face Georgia for a two game set on Tuesday and Wednesday. We're lucky to have two of our SP going without having to go on short rest. Our weekend rotation isn't affected at all either.
Chisoxfn
Titans sweep Souther Miss. After a horrific previous week, which knocked the Titans out of BA's top 25 (ie, getting swept badly by Stanford), Fullerton rebounding with a beatdown of the UCLA bruins (2 game series, one home game a piece) and a nice sweepage of Southern Miss. They have a freaking stud shortstop named Colon (Freshman, who is a stud defensively and seems to have great gap to gap power and speed) and a lot of other young bats who seem to be coming along quickly. Fundementally this team is a typical Fullerton team (ie, probably the strongest fundemental team in the country). They could out bunt/run every single major leage team, imo (not that they could beat any major league team).
chimpy2121
FSU at 14 in the BA Poll. Cal State Fullerton is back to 20, Missouri is up to 4, Vandy is at 6, Miami is 7, and Michigan is at 25. I think those are all of the major schools of interest here. Lost our first game today against Georgia 13-10. It was a continuation of last nights 8-2 postponement. I knew we would be able to win the game if we held them, but of course every time we had it within 1 or 2, the bullpen sucked it up and gave up a gopher ball. Game 2 is 40 minutes. danman31
Aaron Crow vs. Toledo (I know it's Toledo, but still look at these numbers): 9 IP, 0 R, 15 K, 0 BB, 7 hits in only 107 pitches.
maggsmaggs
QUOTE(danman31 @ Mar 15, 2008 -> 04:43 AM) Aaron Crow vs. Toledo (I know it's Toledo, but still look at these numbers): 9 IP, 0 R, 15 K, 0 BB, 7 hits in only 107 pitches. And he was nasty. Hitters looked lost, two hits were bunts and I believe two more were seeing eye singles. And Lee Fischer's BA is rising at a rapid pace. But, honestly, Crow is the most complete pitcher in college baseball, and I am not sure its close. He has close to the top velocity, the best command, two plus pitches (fastball/slider) and a solid change-up and a good baseball IQ.
Chisoxfn
I doubt Crowe falls, but if he did the Sox would be stupid not to pick him. He's polished with front of the rotation stuff. Fullerton got there asses handed to them yesterday by #1 Arizona after losing a mid-week affair to a top 25 San Diego team (a team that many feel will be in the top 5 when the season is done as they, along with Mizzu, have the best pitching staff in the nation). It is quite herky jerky and he short arms it. Not a real big dude either, longevity could be an issue with him. chimpy2121
We beat Ga Tech last night with a walkoff in the 9th. It was pretty awesome, we were down one and had no one on base with one out to go. We ended up loading the bases then Ohmed Danesh got the game winning single. Today was not as close as we won 11-2. Fairel was awesome today. Tomorrow we go for the sweep and Mike Martin's 1,500 victory.
Chisoxfn
The week could have gone better, but considering we had a game against San Diego (L) and than 3 At #1 Arizona (losing 2 out of 3) I can live with things (the Titans are an extremely young squad still gelling and they have played what is arguably the toughest schedule in the country thus far and I fully believe this schedule will help them out when they enter conference play and if they end up making it to the regionals.
