NBA to hold outdoor game in preseason

I hope its really windy so the NBA realizes how lame it is to copy another league's good idea without thinking about the implications wind can have on a jumpshot.

I can't wait for the first wind blown shot. I also hope they're using chain rims.

Er...don't they play tennis in that stadium? And that ball seems to be a little lighter and...um...smaller. So, I think it'll be fine. And it's a great idea. In fact, I think they should do it during the season in a warm weather climate.

This coming from the same league who backed off a synthetic ball because all of the players b****ed that the ball felt different. Now they are going to try and make shots with a wind. Good luck with that. The excuse engine will be on high that night.

Tennis balls are moving a hell of a lot faster though so they aren't pushed by the wind as much, and you're not trying to hit them into a little hoop.

Considering 99% of basketball is played outdoors, I say this is great (a stretch I know, but still. For the everyday joe that plays you play outdoors unless you can find a community center/arena open to the public). I think if it's a success, there should be more outdoor games. If they held one in Chi-town I'd pay to go. Anything to get away from the seizure-enducing environment that people call the United Center.

Take it youve never played tennis without a wind screen?

Wind is one of the biggest factors in HS tennis, even with windscreens. If the wind is in your face its entirely different than the wind being at your back. Wind side to side can change the entire match, even on the serve a gust of wind can completely screw up where the ball goes and the mechanics.

It just depends on the shot, a ground stroke with massive top spin that is kept close to the ground wont be impacted, a lob shot can some times move 15-20 feet, I doubt any basketball is going to be moved even 5 feet by wind, its just to heavy.

No, I'm not a big tennis guy. Maybe I did understate the effects of the wind on the ball, but I still think its more significant in basketball. If the basketball moves over an inch or two, your shot is no good. In tennis, there's a little bit more room for error.

It's a gimmick game in the preseason, who really cares?

The Penguins and Sabres played a regular season game in a snowstorm and everyone thought it was great (because it was).

This is a non-issue.

Hockey outdoors and basketball outdoors are completely different though. wind isnt going to change a pucks direction so much that it completely misses the goal, snow isnt going to stop a hockey game, rain is going to stop an NBA game once the first drop hits.

If it was a regular season game, i would care. It is preseason, so it really doesnt matter to me. They will play the game outdoors, realize it isnt as great as they thought, and move on

Yeah, but tennis is an outdoor game, NBA basketball is not. Thanks for the invalid point though!

Well Steve many people play basketball outside.

It would be like saying baseball is an outdoor sport so therefore should never be played indoors?

Once the NBA plays a game outdoors, then outdoor basketball is part of the NBA.

Its for fun, who cares.

I find nothing wrong with that statement. Baseball in domes is an abomination.

The NBA is becoming more of a joke every year. The trades that have been going on lately have totally ruined the integrity of the game. Teams are trading huge stars for nothing and it has turned into an arms race in the West now.

I know they blocked it from happening but what happened with Stackhouse was ridiculous too.

It is pretty funny that teams have to piss money away to a retired Keith Van Horn just to get a BS trade done. Something needs to be re-worked, because having him involved in a deal is a bit ridiculous.

You do realize that there are tennis tournaments played indoors.

I don't understand what the big deal is, it's preseason, doesn't mean anything and will feel like a pick-up game. An dI would say basketball is more of an outdoor game than you are saying, not for the NBA, but for everyone else. Do you hear more about gym rats or playground heroes? I'd say playground.

Playing at Rucker Park or somewhere like that would be better, though.

But if you saw the hockey game, the snow was slowing/stopping the puck to the point where they did stop the game twice to clear the snow off the ice. The slower puck was making normally instinctive moves and anticipations go awry, which caused turnovers and scoring chances. I found it fascinating to watch.

The rain issue you bring up is a legitimate concern, the wind would be merely a nuisance IMO.

It can't be stressed strongly enough that it would be a preseason game, counting for nothing in the standings.

It's a gimmick game, and I'd be interested to see it.

Nah, any wind at all COMPLETELY changes a shot, doesn't matter how much there is. It'd definitely be more than a nuisance. I'm not pissed by this or anything since it is a preseason game but it's a dumb idea imo.
