Considering guys like Prior got $1 million guaranteed, I would probably think Bartolo is looking at that, with a lot of incentives, some easy to reach so if he pitches like a $2 million or $ 3 million or $15 million pitcher, he will get paid like one. Maybe a team option for 2009 or maybe Colon says no to that and the guarantee goes down a little.

Agreed. Something tells me that he's going to laugh at a minor-league deal. What Prior got seems about right.

hes going to want at least 5 mil a year

And that's why he's still a free agent.

Best case scenario for Colon would be 1 year, $1 million or so + oodles of incentives. Anything more then something around there is ridiculous.

Maybe the Sox could do with Colon what they did with Loaiza's deal. Would that work?

No, Loaiza didn't have a Cy Young nor 146 wins under his belt. He also signed in a pretty weak market, while the market is up right now.

Colon is probably going to get $3-5 mill with an option for next year that's in the $11-15 mill range.

I think this is the closest so far. I would guess 2-3 million in base salary with incentives based on innings pitched or games started to push him into the 10-12 million dollar range. I am going to guess they also agree on a mutual option for somewhere around 13 million, or just a little less than what Buehrle extended for annually.

I'm not very familiar with the collective barganing agreement, so this is kind of a blind question, but is there any regulations on what he can sign for? Does it have to be a certain percentage of his old contract?

There is something in the CB Agreement, but it does not apply to a player signing a "new" contract.

A team cannot structure a contract where it drastically reduces a player's salary in the last year of a deal (past a certain percentage).

But once that contract ends, performance may have reached a level where a player is worth far less than he was under his previous contract, as in the case of Colon.

Have fun not signing him then

Exactly,if he is satisfied with a minor league contract he will go wherever the hell he wants. Most of the teams in the league would give him a minor league deal.
