That pick was horrid, given the fact that the Bears had Alex Brown, Ogunleye, and Anderson. There was absolutley no need to grab a De in the 2nd round. Especially not one that wasn't even expected to go off the boards in RD2. That was easily Angelo's worse pick because there was so much other need positions on the board at such time.

Great use of a 2nd round pick. Could really have used an OL with that one instead.

I was kind of hoping to see him get pushed around by Ugoh in Week 1 so it could sort rub Angelo's nose in the pile of s*** he left on the living room, so to speak.

Bear Cuts

The Chicago Bears released a pair of 2007 first-day draft picks Saturday when they made the final roster cut to 53 players. Second-round draft pick Dan Bazuin, a defensive end from Central Michigan, and third-round pick Michael Okwo, a linebacker from Stanford, were cut.

Bazuin was the 30th pick last year but missed the season after injuring a knee during offseason workouts. Okwo went on injured reserve with a shoulder injury before the start of last season.

Wide receivers Mike Hass and Brandon Rideau, who spent most of last year on the practice squad and had impressed coaches in preseason games, were also released.

Fullback Lousaka Polite, a five-year veteran, and guard Anthony Oakley were the only players released after playing in more than one game last year.

Also cut were tight end Fontel Mines, punter Zacrey Atterberry, defensive end Ervin Baldwin, tackle Cody Balogh, defensive back Trey Brown, defensive end Joe Clermond, long snapper Thomas Gafford, linebacker Joey LaRoque, defensive end Nick Osborn, safety Leonard Peters, guards Ryan Poles and Chester Adams, running back P.J. Pope, guard Tyler Reed and tight end Marcus Stone.

Baldwin, a seventh-round pick, was the only 2008 draft choice released Saturday.

BUCS SEND BUENNING TO BEARS

Posted by Mike Florio on September 2, 2008, 4:47 p.m.

On the same day that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought back center/guard Sean Mahan via a trade with the Steelers, the Bucs sent guard Dan Buenning to the Chicago Bears.

Buenning was a fourth-round draft pick of the Bucs in 2005, and he is signed through 2009. His salaries are $800,000 this year and $545,000 in 2009.

In return, the Bucs received an undisclosed 2009 draft pick.

Is Willie Anderson still available? If so, is he too expensive?

Bears talk to free-agent tackle Anderson, but chances slim

The Bears have had contact with free-agent Pro Bowl tackle Willie Anderson, but the chances of the veteran joining the Bears are slim to none, according to an NFL source.

Anderson, 33, was released by the Cincinnati Bengals on cut down day. He became a backup to Stacy Andrews at right tackle and refused to take a pay cut. He had a streak of 116 consecutive games stopped last season due to chronic pain in his right foot and also battled knee problems.

Anderson signed a fiive-year contract extension in 2005 reportedly worth $32 million. Money is part of the reason he doesn't fit into the Bears' plan despite the team's need for help on the offensive line.

The Bears lost rookie left tackle Chris Williams until at least November following back surgery. Guard Terrence Metcalf just returned to practice Monday off a knee injury. Veteran Fred Miller is mulling over the Bears' one-year contract offer after being cut by the team following last season.

Also, the Bears had talks about acquiring Chris Simms but those talks have died down, the source said. Simms visited Baltimore Monday but did not sign with the Ravens. He was released by the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Simms appeared to be a viable option earlier in the off-season, but the Bears don't want to shake up the roster at this point.

Giants looked very good defensively again last night. That team is going to be annoying (especially to Dallas again) come playoff time.

They always seem to get a good pass rush with just 4 guys, even without Strahan and Umenyora. Justin Tuck is becoming a real good defensive lineman.

Justin Tuck is becoming a real good defensive lineman.

He was already a good lineman. He just never had a chance to play enough.

He was a beast at Notre Dame.

The guy would have had a lot more notice by the NFL as a Senior, if he hadn't left a year early.

congrats to the NFL for having the Saints win this game against the Bucs today.

One of the most OBVIOUS offensive holds wasnt called on a play that resulted in a 25-30 yard swing pass to Bush on 2nd and 6 from their own 24. Three plays later the Saints score the touchdown that would be the difference.

Huge difference in 2nd and 16 from your 14 than 1st and 10 from the Bucs 47.
