Why do cops constantly way overvalue drugs? Does it make the sentence longer?

Inside the two bags were several bales of marijuana, each weighing around 25 pounds (11 kilograms), Rice said.

The haul, which has an estimated street value of around 1.3 million dollars, was one of the biggest in Maryland, Rice said.

Doing the math, that's $59 a gram. I never bought weed in my life, but I know a rip off when I see it.

That must've been some really, REALLY good stuff if a dimebag costs that much. Or maybe the pigs are just full of it.

You're assuming "several" = 2.

holy crap...reading the story....one of the bales was marked 1, and another one was marked 286....286 25 pound bales?! basically this guy had 8 bales, which was 1.3 mil....so 286 bales is 46.5 million...and that assumes 286 is the last one, which is unlikely....thats alot of pot

Its about 50 pounds of Marijuana from how I read the story.

50 x16= 800 oz x 8= 6400

6400 x$50= $320,000

In order for it to be over a million it would have had to be 3x the amount, meaning 150 lbs (which doing the above math comes out to $920k)

They must have been using a street value of over $50 an 1/8, (my calculations is almost 3x that), which comes out exactly like Santo said.

Nothing on the market costs over $60, not even prescription Cali stuff. Also, they are probably counting if you sell it at the smallest denomination and when you keep breaking it down it gets more and more expensive, ie:

Lets say an 1/8= $50 (3.5 grams)

1 gram alone would cost $20 (coming out to $70 an 1/8)

Now if you broke it down to half a gram it might be something like $15 (which would come out to $105 an 1/8)

Still pretty clear the Cops used a little hyperbole.
